Alinea, one of Chicago’s most famous and critically acclaimed restaurants, was stripped of a star by MICHELIN, landing at 2-star status, the restaurant said Wednesday.
Alinea, located in Chicago’s Lincoln Park neighborhood at 1723 North Halsted Street, is known for its immersive and intricate dining experience crafted by Chef Grant Achatz.
In an Instagram post Wednesday, Alinea said “We were disappointed to learn of our @michelinguide demotion to two stars. For 20 years, Alinea has been devoted to pushing creativity, rigor, and the pursuit of perfection in our craft. That commitment remains as unwavering today as it was on day one, and will continue until the back door of 1723 locks for the last time.”
Alinea was previously consistently given a 3-star ranking by MICHELIN since the debut of their Chicago guide in 2011.
After Alinea’s demotion, Fulton Market’s Smyth is the only 3-star ranked restaurant in Chicago on the guide.

The demotion comes just ahead of the 2026 Banchet Awards celebrating culinary excellence in Chicago, set to take place on January 25.
Achatz will accept the Lifetime Achievement award for Culinary Excellence at The Banchets.
Despite Alinea’s confirmation of the change, the restaurant’s page on the MICHELIN Guide website still shows a ranking of “Three Stars: Exceptional cuisine” as of 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Despite the recent change by MICHELIN, Alinea is consistently highly ranked and rated by many other elite organizations, including winning multiple James Beard Awards and scoring a spot on La Liste’s 2025 list of top restaurants around the globe.
