Curb Your Enthusiasm star Cheryl Hines had a very intense physical reaction to meeting Donald Trump for the first time.
The actress, who rose to fame on the beloved HBO comedy series Curb Your Enthusiasm, reveals in her new memoir, Unscripted, that she first met Trump shortly after he was targeted in an assassination attempt in Pennsylvania in July 2024. Trump had called and asked Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who had not yet dropped out of the race, to fly out and meet him in Milwaukee. While Joe Biden was president at the time, Trump said he believed Kennedy needed to have Secret Service protection. Trump proceeded to post a message on the topic on Truth Social.
"The moment I stepped out of the hotel suite, I broke out into hives. I've never broken out in hives before, not once, but suddenly I had hives all up and down my arms and I could feel them making their way across my abdomen," Hines recalled, PEOPLE shared. "Was I allergic to something there? That night, one of Bobby's staff joked that I must've been allergic to President Trump," Hines wrote.
20 minutes later, they were informed that only Kennedy would be receiving the security.
"That meant that our immediate family, the kids and I, would not be protected even though this was customary for all other nominees' families. As they talked, I could feel my hives make their way down my legs," Hines wrote. "My hives were going strong."
By the time she made it to dinner that night, her "bottom lip had swelled to the size of a baby carrot."
"Was I still having an allergic reaction to something?" she wrote. "(It couldn't have been President Trump; he was on the other side of Milwaukee.) Between my hives and my swollen lip, I was really a sight to see."
She eventually sought the advice of a doctor who ruled out an allergic reaction but advised her to be less stressed.

In a recent interview, Hines revealed that her husband's endorsement of President Trump cost her several friendships.
Hines told President Trump’s daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, that some people stopped talking to her after years of friendship, according to an exclusive clip provided to PEOPLE.
“He originally ran for president as a Democrat, and then that comes to an end and he says, ‘I’m actually going to support the Republican candidate for president, but not just any Republican candidate, Donald Trump,’ ” Lara asks Hines in the interview, which ran on FOX News Channel’s My View with Lara Trump. “Did you hear from people? Did you suddenly not hear from people? How did that go for you?”
In response, Hines said she was pleased that some friends were responsive and willing to discuss the issue. However, others were not.
“I heard from people. You know what, I was actually grateful for my good friends that had feelings about it, still have feelings about it, but at least would call me and say, ‘I can’t believe this is happening, you can’t let this happen!'” Hines replied. “I would rather that than somebody who I’ve known for 30 years just stop talking to me altogether.”
“I’ve experienced it all,” she continued. “And then I have some really good friends that, you know, we have thoughtful discussions where it’s, you know, you can say, ‘Wow, here’s something that happened that I didn’t like, that still bothers me, and here’s something that’s happening that I think is good.’ “
Hines says those friends could “see both sides and it’s not black and white,” adding, “So I really appreciate those people.”
