Spain’s elite swimmers are arriving in Barcelona to compete in the RFEN’s final major event of the year: the Astrapool Spanish Short Course Championships.

    Lublin 2025 Qualification

This meet will serve as the final opportunity to qualify for the 2025 European Short Course Championships in Lublin, Poland, at the beginning of December.

Spain will bring up to four swimmers per event, except for events of a length 400 and up, which have two open spots each. Swimmers who finaled at the 2025 World Championships in Singapore or who medalled at the 2025 World Championships already have a spot reserved. The rest of the team will consist of swimmers who hit the following marks in Barcelona this weekend:

    Names To Watch

All eyes will be on 17-year-old Luca Hoek as he steps on the blocks for the first time since the 2025 Singapore Worlds. At that meet, Hoek posted a 48.04 100 freestyle to slice several tenths off the national record. Earlier in the summer, at the European Junior Championships, the Catalonia native walked away with two gold and two bronze medals, as well as a 21.99 50 freestyle, becoming the first ever sub-22 Spaniard.

Hoek leads a charge of Euro Junior medallists, who by virtue of their podium finishes have already punched their tickets to Lublin. The male contingent includes Hoek, distance swimmer and IMer Cristobal Vargas, and butterflier Isak Fernandez. The women’s group consists of backstrokers Estrella Tonrath and Nahia Garrido, freestyler Maria Daza, and breaststroker Nayara Pineda.

Singapore semifinalists Carmen Weiler and Emma Carasco will be present, contending for titles in their respective backstroke and IM events. Weiler notably makes the trip back home as her NCAA team of Virginia Tech competes in the Georgia Tech Invitational.

2024 Olympic finalist Hugo Gonzalez is slated to swim five events after missing out on Singapore. His battles in the backstroke events with Ivan Martinez will be among the most exciting storylines of the men’s meet.

Besides the Euro Juniors medallists, the only swimmer to have already qualified for Lublin is Carles Coll Marti. Coll is absent from the start list in his signature breaststroke events after a strong performance at the World Cup in the U.S.. He is likely still in America gearing up for Lublin at Virginia Tech. Also notably missing is Canadian national Kylie Masse, who trains in Madrid under Ben Titley and frequents high-level meets in the country.
