South Africa’s kitchens have dimmed their flames this week following the death of beloved TV chef Mynie Steffens.
The 43-year-old cookbook author died on November 10 when the helicopter she was piloting crashed during a flight near Patensie in the Eastern Cape. According to the George Herald, authorities say the Robinson R22 helicopter hit power lines while she was conducting a pest-control run over a citrus farm early Monday morning. She was the only person onboard.

For those unfamiliar with her work, Steffens fronted the Afrikaans cooking-show Speel met Vuur alongside her longtime friend Adi van der Walt. The series hit screens in 2017 on VIA, taking viewers along as the duo cooked over open fires (known locally as ‘braai’) and celebrated South Africa’s outdoor-cooking culture.
Shortly after news of the crash spread, van der Walt spoke to IOL about the “massive shock” of losing her.
“Mynie lived life to the full,” she said, calling her “the glue that kept people together.” The two first met playing hockey at Nico Malan High in Humansdorp and reconnected years later, when Steffens shared her dream of creating a cooking show. “A year or two later, that dream was realised,” van der Walt added. “She had patience and kindness coupled with humour, and that made her irresistible to people. I will miss my friend. Her absence will be felt by many.”
VIA TV also paid tribute. Originally written in Afrikaans, the network wrote on Facebook: “Rest in peace, Mynie Steffens. You were adventurous until the end. With #PlayWithFire, you showed us all how to approach life with curiosity and bravery. Sleep softly.”
