KISS Bandmates Reunite on Stage to Pay Tribute to Ace Frehley — How They’ll Honor the Guitar Legend Next

KISS fans witnessed a mini reunion at the Love Ride 34 charity event at Castaic Lake in California. On Nov. 9, the Gene Simmons Band was on the bill for the charity concert, but the legendary bassist was joined by longtime KISS guitarist Tommy Thayer and drummer Eric Singer for several classic songs, according to American Songwriter.

The trio performed the KISS hits “Let Me Go, Rock ‘n’ Roll” and “Calling Dr. Love,” and Thayer remained on stage for a performance of “Rock and Roll All Nite.”

Simmons co-founded KISS in 1973 alongside lead singer Paul Stanley, lead guitarist Ace Frehley, and drummer Peter Criss.

Amid the departures of Frehley and Criss from KISS, Thayer became lead guitarist and vocalist for the glam band from 2002 to 2023, and Singer appeared as drummer in multiple incarnations of the band between 1991 and 2003.

During the Love Ride 34 show, Simmons spoke about Frehley, who died on Oct. 16 at age 74. The guitar great died two months before the band is set to receive a lifetime achievement honor at The Kennedy Center Honors ceremony.

Simmons paid tribute to Frehley ahead of performing the KISS classic “Cold Gin,” which was the first song Frehley ever wrote for the band.

" I want to take a moment just to tell you that somebody I've known for many decades who started the band with us, a guy named Ace Frehley,” he said, per Blabbermouth.net. “Paul and myself, and Peter Criss, we went to Ace's funeral. He sadly passed. And the saddest part of all, besides the pain and suffering to his friends, family, his daughter, his wife, his whole family, is that Ace didn't live long enough to be with us on December 6 when the president and everybody's gonna get up there and honor KISS in entering the Kennedy Center Honors.”

Simmons revealed that singer Garth Brooks will take the stage to talk about how KISS inspired his career. “Then he's gonna play 'Shout It Out Loud' and knock it out of the park,” Simmons shared. “And in Ace's memory, we're gonna make sure one of the four chairs is empty with Ace's name, because he deserves to be there in spirit, even if he can't be there physically."

When the Kennedy Center honor was first announced in August, Frehley called it a “dream come true that I never thought would materialize,” according to Billboard.
