Dolly Parton has achieved countless career milestones, but one of her most unforgettable moments came when she learned she’d have the chance to share a kiss with one of the 1970s’ most legendary sex symbols.
Parton was exploring options outside of writing and recording music in the early part of the 1980s. After a star turn as Doralee Rhodes in the hit film 9 to 5, Parton was offered the chance to star alongside Burt Reynolds in the 1982 film musical, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.
Parton played Mona Stangley, a colorful character who ran "The Chicken Ranch" brothel outside of Lanville County, Texas. Stangley and Sheriff Ed Earl Dodd (Reynolds) were lovers who developed a lasting relationship that would endure outside of her business.
Parton said she jumped at the chance to not only work alongside Reynolds, but to kiss him. She told Rolling Stone, in 1980, "When they started askin’ for suggestions, I said I would like to see more of a romance. Wouldn’t you feel like you wasted five dollars if you paid to see Whorehouse and you didn’t see me and Burt kiss?"
She added, "I was makin’ a joke, and I stuck to it. I’m not going to miss my chance to kiss Burt Reynolds."
She also had the blessing of her late husband, Carl Dean, when it came to locking lips with the legendary Hollywood Romeo. In the book Dolly on Dolly, Interviews and Encounters With Dolly Parton, she revealed, "I’ve asked Carl’s permission and I got it in writing. I’ll kiss him for every woman in America who ever wanted to. I’m gonna lay a good one on him!”

Parton, later told 60 Minutes Australia that it was "embarrassing" kissing someone in front of a bunch of people. "When I kissed Burt [Reynolds] he had some black stuff on his mustache. We did our scene, but then when we pulled back, I looked like I'd been sucking a saw."
'The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas' featured a memorable Dolly Parton song
The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas was a box office hit for Dolly Parton and Burt Reynolds. It opened on July 23, 1982, and bumped the Steven Spielberg film E.T. from the top spot with an $11M box office gross, as reported by Box Office Mojo. Subsequently, the film set a record for the biggest opening ever for a musical and went on to earn nearly $70 million.
Included in the film's soundtrack was Parton's song, "I Will Always Love You." It is featured during a memorable scene when Ed tells Mona he loves her, but she says they won't have a chance as a couple in the real world.
In 1974, Parton hit the top of the Billboard Country charts with the tune. However, the song didn't gain widespread popularity until a Whitney Houston version was featured in the 1992 film The Bodyguard, spending 14 weeks at the top of the charts.
Parton wrote "I Will Always Love For" to signal the end of her professional relationship with her mentor Porter Wagoner. She told The Tennessean, “How am I gonna make [Porter] understand how much I appreciate everything, but that I have to go?” So she wrote the now iconic song.
Parton and Wagoner remained friendly through his death in October 2007. Burt Reynolds died in September 2018.
Dolly Parton remains a vital part of the entertainment community. She is scheduled to open a Las Vegas residency in 2026.
