Warren Haynes is keeping the spirit of Grateful Dead cofounder Phil Lesh alive this December with a special tribute performance at his annual Christmas Jam in Asheville, North Carolina.
Lesh, who died in October 2024, was a frequent supporter of the charity concert, which raises money for Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity and BeLoved Asheville. Over the past three decades, Christmas Jam has helped fund more than 50 homes and raised more than three million dollars for the local community.

A Longtime Friend and Musical Inspiration
In a recent interview with Ultimate Classic Rock, Haynes, 65, looked back on Lesh’s long history with the event.
“Phil came so many times to Christmas Jam. And you know, getting from California to Asheville in December is not the easiest thing in the world to do,” he told the outlet in an interview Tuesday, November 11. “I was so grateful that he came as many times as he did.”

This year’s lineup will feature Lesh’s son, Grahame, performing alongside Haynes, JimmyHerring, John Molo, and Jason Crosby.
“It would have been [Phil’s] Q quintet if Rob Barraco were available,” Haynes explained. “But Jason’s joining us, and I’m super excited. It’s a beautiful tribute to not only Phil, but to his spirit as part of so many Christmas Jams.”
Remembering a Deep Musical Bond
Haynes also paid tribute to Lesh after his passing last year, calling him “one of the most open-minded musicians” he had ever known. The pair first teamed up in 1999 for a series of shows that turned into decades of collaboration through projects like The Dead and Phil Lesh & Friends.
“Phil always maintained that the music already existed — we just tapped into it,” Haynes recalled. “He was there for me when I lost my musical soulmate, Allen Woody. He knew what that kind of loss felt like.”
The 33rd annual Christmas Jam is set to take place on December 13 in Haynes’ hometown of Asheville, North Carolina.
