Dancing with the Stars has been sizzling all season long, achieving its highest ratings since Tom Bergeron's 2020 departure. And the former host — who returned as a special guest judge for DWTS' 20th anniversary celebration — could not be more thrilled about its recent success.
"I think that the show is doing exactly what it should do at 20 years old," he tells Parade in an exclusive interview. "I think that they've got the right team and it feels young and it feels refreshed, and I think you can see that in the total audience numbers."

Bergeron is also impressed with the current lineup of hosts, judges and contestants. "Derek [Hough] is there, sort of filling Len's central judge role, and you've got Alfonso [Ribiero] and Julianne," he says. "It's a younger-feeling show. They're casting it with influencers and people that I wouldn't know from a hole in the wall, but are obviously charismatic and [make] very good television. As much as I appreciate all of the lovely reactions I'm getting to coming back, I don't think a 70-year-old guy should be hosting that show."
But there is one major thing that Bergeron would change.
"I do miss the results show," he says. Previously, Dancing with the Stars, much like American Idol, would have a separate results show the day after the performances, tallying up all the votes accrued overnight. When the show moved to Disney+ in 2022, it elected to get rid of the results show, instead having eliminations be determined by live voting over the course of the episode.

"Based on the ratings success that they are having now, [I hope] that ABC brings back the results show and enables the voting to carry over to the next day."
Bergeron believes that every viewer—in every time zone—should have the opportunity to cast their vote. "By the time it's replayed on the West Coast, they don't have a chance to vote. It's already done. If I was at ABC in a position to call the shots, I'd put the results show back on. There's nothing that the network has that's doing as well as Dancing with the Stars."
Dancing With the Stars airs Tuesday nights from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. ET/PT on ABC and streams the next day on Hulu.
