Abdi moves to fast track SDF integration after Syria joins the Coalition

SDF commander Mazloum Abdi said Syria’s accession to the Global Coalition to Defeat the Islamic State group is a pivotal step toward strengthening joint efforts to eliminate the organization and ensure it no longer threatens the region.

In a post on X on November 11, Abdi said he held a phone call with the U.S. envoy to Syria, Thomas Barrack, during which they discussed the outcomes of Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa’s meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House.

Al-Sharaa held a closed-door meeting with Trump on November 10 during a visit to the United States that was described as historic. The two presidents discussed a range of issues, including the March 10 agreement.

Abdi affirmed the SDF’s commitment to accelerating integration into Syrian state institutions.

He thanked U.S. President Donald Trump for his leadership on the Syrian file and for giving the Syrian people a chance at greatness, referring to the decision to extend the suspension of Caesar Act sanctions.

He added that the next stage will see intensive work with international partners for a more prosperous and secure future for a unified Syria.

In a related development, Democratic Union Party (PYD) co-chair Saleh Muslim said recent events indicate the launch of new discussions between Ankara and Damascus over the administration of northeastern Syria, following the meeting that brought together the Turkish, Syrian, and U.S. foreign ministers.

Speaking to the Kurdish outlet “Khoibun” on November 11, Muslim said the coming period will witness expanded meetings in Damascus with the participation of representatives of the SDF, the Autonomous Administration, and the International Coalition, focusing on the future of areas in the north and east of the country.

He added that Turkey had previously objected to the agreement because it was not a party to its preparation or signing, but the Turkish foreign minister’s participation in the recent Washington meeting signals Ankara’s acceptance of the agreement.

Posts for SDF leaders at the Defense Ministry

Two sources, one a Syrian government official and the other close to the SDF, told Saudi Arabia’s Al Arabiya TV that a new round of negotiations between the SDF and Damascus is expected this week after al-Sharaa and his foreign minister, Asaad al-Shibani, return from the United States.

An official SDF source told Al Arabiya the names of three SDF commanders who will assume posts at the Syrian Ministry of Defense once agreement is reached to incorporate the SDF as a single bloc within the Syrian army.

The source said the Syrian army currently being formed consists of divisions and brigades, therefore the SDF will be integrated into the military institution through one division and at least two brigades.

He noted that the SDF has nominated three officials to lead these formations, namely Lokman Khalil, Jia Kobani, and Jamil Kobani.

    Previous verbal understanding

Abdi had previously said his forces reached a preliminary understanding with Damascus on several issues, including a comprehensive ceasefire and continued high-level dialogue.

In remarks to the Kurdish Ronahi TV on October 11, he said he met separately in Damascus with the defense minister and the intelligence chief, noting there is an understanding on the principle of decentralization in governance, with talks ongoing over how its related terms are defined.

He explained that the two sides reached a verbal coordination on incorporating the SDF into the Syrian army, adding that Damascus expressed a desire to benefit from SDF expertise and that a military committee including representatives of the Internal Security Forces will soon head to Damascus to follow up the details.

Abdi said a military and security understanding is under discussion, and that Washington proposed forming a joint force between the SDF and the Syrian army to fight the Islamic State group, a U.S. proposal he accepted to ensure the war against the organization has a nationwide character.
