The Class 3A high school football playoffs kick off this weekend, while the playoffs in other classifications roar on with second-round matchups.
Seven local teams will compete in six games in four different classifications.
The action on Friday and Saturday takes place after the Tribune’s copy deadlines for the next day’s paper.

Here’s a look at the six matchups involving local teams this week:
Class 3A, first round
No. 16 Severance Silver Knights (4-6) at No. 1 Windsor Wizards (10-0), 1 p.m. Saturday
Storylines are aplenty in this playoff-opening matchup, as Severance makes the short trip to take on its Weld RE-4 School District sister school. Windsor is coming off a regular season campaign in which it went 5-0 in the 3A North 2 League, claiming its third consecutive league championship.
The Wizards outscored their opponents by an average of 37-4 during the regular season, recording four shutouts.
Windsor averages 236.7 rushing yards and 64.9 passing yards per game. Senior Adrian Czyszczon leads the Wizards’ balanced offense, averaging 113.1 rushing yards per game with 15 touchdowns on the season. Senior linebacker Isaiah Cronk is Windsor’s leading tackler with 91 tackles, including 23 solo tackles.
Severance finished fourth in the 3A North 1 League with a 2-3 record. The Silver Knights were outscored by an average of 22-19 per game.

Junior Darrick Potts is Severance’s top receiver, averaging 36.9 receiving yards per game with two touchdowns this season. Senior Kelson Gazdik is the Silver Knights’ leading tackler with 85, including 53 solo.
These two teams squared off during the nonleague season with Windsor picking up a 14-3 win at home Sept. 19.
The winner of this game takes on No. 8 Conifer (9-1) or No. 9 Pueblo South (8-2) in the second round next week.
No. 11 Pueblo County Hornets (7-3) at No. 6 Roosevelt Rough Riders (7-3)
Roosevelt was its normal, steady self during the regular season, placing second in the 3A North 1 League, behind Pomona, with a 4-1 record. The Rough Riders’ three losses during the regular season were all competitive affairs against top teams: Holy Family, Windsor and Pomona.
Roosevelt outscores its opponents an average of 37-16 per game. It enters this week with a four-game win streak.
The Rough Riders average 210.1 rushing yards and 154.7 passing yards per game. Senior Milo Pascual leads the way, averaging 115.8 rushing yards per game with 13 touchdowns this fall. Senior Evan Hays and sophomore Jacobo Rosales are Roosevelt’s top 2 tacklers with 63 and 61, respectively.
Pueblo County tied for first place in the 3A Southern League with a 4-1 mark. The Hornets also outscored their opponents by an average of 37-16 on the season and they are also on a four-game win streak.
Their losses this season are against Pueblo West, Discovery Canyon and Coronado.
Pueblo County averages 276.7 rushing yards and 132.5 passing yards per game. Junior Brady Ware is a big workhorse for the Hornets, averaging 135 rushing yards per game with 13 touchdowns on the season. Senior Luca Tucci is Pueblo County’s leading tackler with 78 tackles, including 47 solo.
The winner matches up with No. 3 Palisade (8-2) or No. 14 Timnath (6-4) in the second week next week.

No. 1 Strasburg Indians (10-0) at No. 9 Eaton Reds (7-3), 1 p.m. Saturday
Eaton made an instant impact on this postseason, going on the road for an emphatic 27-13 win this past week over No. 8 La Junta (7-3) in the opening round. Strasburg survived a scare in a 21-17 home win against No. 16 Basalt (6-4).
During the regular season, the Reds placed third in the 2A North League with a 3-2 mark. They have outscored their opponents by an average of 21-17 this season.
Eaton averages 189.7 rushing yards and 96.2 passing yards per game. Junior bell cow Jackson Savona averages 136 rushing yards per game with 12 touchdowns this season. Senior Vinnie Juarez leads the Reds defense with 63 tackles, including 16 solo.
Eaton’s losses this fall were to The Classical Academy, Resurrection Christian and Wellington — all teams competing in the second round this week.
Strasburg was a perfect 4-0 in the 2A East League. It has outscored its opponents 39-11 this fall.
The Indians are one of few small-school teams that do more damage through the air then they do on the ground. They average 202 passing yards and 173.5 rushing yards per game. Senior Cade Hemphill averages 134.7 rushing yards per game with 21 touchdowns on the season. Senior Ethan Freeman has a team-high 100 tackles, 23 solo.
The winner advances to the semifinals next week to take on No. 4 Elizabeth (8-2) or No. 5 Brush (10-0).
No. 7 Resurrection Christian Cougars (7-3) at No. 2 Wellington Eagles (10-0), 7 p.m. Friday
Resurrection Christian couldn’t have asked for a better start to its playoff campaign. The Cougars beat No. 10 Denver West 49-0 this past week.
Wellington was equally dominant in its 48-0 win against No. 15 Alamosa.
Resurrection Christian went 4-1 in the 2A North League, finishing second behind this same Eagles squad, which went 5-0.
This two league foes met in the regular season with Wellington walking away with a 21-16 road win. The Cougars’ other two losses this season were against bigger schools: Palisade and Lutheran, which are both 3A playoff qualifiers.
Resurrection Christian has outscored its opponents by an average of 35-12 this fall. The Cougars are supremely balanced offensively, averaging 161.5 passing yards and 161.2 rushing yards per game. Senior Britton Walston leads the way, averaging 118.9 rushing yards per game with 21 touchdowns on the season.
Senior Mwanje Peterson is Resurrection Christian’s top tackler with 92 tackles, including 42 solo.
Wellington has been completely dominant this fall, outscoring opponents by an average of 43-4.
The Eagles average 291.3 rushing yards and 54.7 passing yards per game. Junior Cyle Kisner (86.6 rush yards per game, 13 TDs) and sophomore Brayton Meglen (77.7 rush yards per game, 10 TDs) anchor a potent run game.
Senior Tanner Gray leads Wellington’s smothering defense with eight sacks on the season.
The winner of this matchup takes on third-seed Classical Academy (10-0) or No. 6 Kent Denver (8-2) in the semifinals next week.
1A 11-man second round
No. 4 Centauri Falcons (9-1) at No. 12 Highland Huskies (7-3), 1 p.m. Saturday
Highland pulled off a sizable upset in its playoff opener this past week with a 41-35 road win against fifth-seeded Forge Christian (8-2). The Fury’s only previous loss was against 2A playoff qualifier Kent Denver (8-2) back on Sept. 20.
Centauri decisively defeated No. 13 North Fork 35-21 in its playoff opener.
During the regular season, the Huskies went 2-1 in the 1A Central League, placing second behind Platte Valley, which went 4-0 in league play. The title race came down to the final regular season game, which the Broncos won, 35-14. Highland’s other two losses this fall were in its season opener against Flatirons Academy, 14-13, and a 13-7 overtime loss to Denver West on Oct. 16.
The Huskies have outscored their opponents by an average of 29-17 this season. Highland averages 197.9 rushing yards and 103 passing yards per game. Senior Elijah Elder leads a very balanced run game, averaging 76.8 rushing yards per game with five touchdowns on the season. Senior Daryan Shaw is Highland’s top receiver, averaging 63.5 receiving yards per game with seven touchdowns this season.
On defense, senior Wyatt Chase has 114 tackles, including 62 solo, for the Huskies. Fellow senior Brogan Palmer has six sacks.
Centauri’s one loss this season was a 37-27 slip-up against unbeaten Buena Vista (10-0) — 1A 11-man’s top seed — on Sept. 11. The Falcons outscore their opponents by an average of 36-12.
They average 173.4 rushing yards and 91.1 passing yards per game. Junior Leland Chacon leads a very balanced attack, averaging 45.9 rushing yards per game with seven touchdowns on the season. Junior Blake Johnson has a team-high 84 tackles, including 12 solo.
The winner of this matchup moves on to the semifinals to take on No. 1 Buena Vista or No. 8 Meeker (8-2).
1A 8-man second round
No. 5 Dayspring Christian Eagles (7-3) at No. 4 Sanford Mustangs (9-1), 1 p.m. Saturday
Dayspring Christian earned a decisive 33-8 first-round win against No. 12 Byers this past Saturday. Sanford was just as impressive in its 49-16 win against No. 13 Las Animas.
Two of the Eagles’ three losses this season were against Akron (10-0), which is the top seed in the 8-man playoffs. The other loss was against Haxtun (9-1), which is the second seed.
Dayspring has outscored its opponents by an average of 31-15. The Eagles average 224.5 rushing yards and 75.4 passing yards per game. Sophomore quarterback Hawkins Flanagan leads a balanced offense, averaging 81.8 rushing yards per game with 19 touchdowns this fall. He has completed 47 of 99 passes for 639 yards, 12 touchdowns and four interceptions.
Senior Elijah Martin has 128 tackles, 85 solo, for Dayspring.
Sanford’s only loss this season was against aforementioned Haxtun. The Mustangs are outscoring opponents by an average of 44-18.
Sanford averages 344.2 rushing yards and 60.9 passing yards per game. Senior quarterback Trason Gartrell is one of the most productive offensive players in the state. He averages 192.9 rushing yards per game and has 32 touchdowns on the season. He’s completed 25 of 63 passes for 460 yards, five touchdowns and five interceptions.
The winner of this game takes on top-seed Akron or No. 9 Mancos (7-3) in next week’s semifinals.
