From covering King Diamond and Mercyful Fateon Garage Inc. to teaming up with Lou Reed for a divisive art-rock album, Metallica has never been afraid to show its love and appreciation for other bands and artists. And much like how Taylor Swift changed up the set of her Eras Tour with her "Surprise Song," Metallica has dedicated a moment during their recent shows to playing a different song in honor of a local music act.

These "doodle" segments on the recent M72 tour feature lead guitarist Kirk Hammett and bassist Rob Trujillo playing together, busting out music by artists ranging from John Denver to Dead Kennedys to Dolly Parton. And when the band was in Melbourne, Australia, on Nov. 8, Hammett and Trujillo paid homage to The Living End.
Metallica Covers The Living End and Lead Singer Responds
Fronted by guitarist/vocalist Chris Cheney, The Living End burst on the scene in the mid-1990s, a punk rock/quasi-psychobilly band featuring Scott Owen on the double bass. The group quickly tasted fame with the release of their two-song EP, Second Solution / Prisoner of Society, in 1997. It was a massive success in Australia, eventually going double Platinum; so much so that they decided to release "Prisoner of Society" as a single in the U.K. and the United States (where it hit No. 23 on the Alternative Airplay charts).
Clearly, Rob and Kirk were two of the fans cranking "Prisoner of Society" when it came on the radio in the late '90s, because they covered the song during their Melbourne show. After first teasing INXS's "Don't Change," they launched into the punk anthem, with Trujillo singing along. Afterward, Cheney reflected on the experience with a Nov. 10 post on Instagram.
"What even??? In 1992, Wheelers Hill High School held a Battle of the Bands. The newly formed Runaway Boys entered and played (naturally) 'Rock This Town' by The Stray Cats," he wrote, referring to his band.

"It was pretty good; I thought we might even have it in the bag," he continued. "The band after us had other ideas. They were called Texas Rose and proceeded to play a super version of 'Enter Sandman' by Metallica, which was far more appealing to the audience and judges than our Happy Days get up and rockabilly licks!"
"They simply stole the show and won. If I wasn't bummed enough already, the bass player came up to me afterwards with a big grin and said, 'hehe, we beat you!' Ouch! Well, guess what, mother f--ker," added Cheney, "Metallica are now covering our song in front of 50,000 people! Stick that in your pipe and smoke it! Funny old life, innit?"
View this post on InstagramThe Living End charted twice more in the U.S. and the U.K., respectively, and has remained a rock and roll fixture in their home country of Australia. In July, the band released their ninth studio album, I Only Trust Rock n Roll.
It was their first album since 2018's Wunderbar, and when announcing it, Cheney said they were getting back to basics. "We did not want to make a big, over-the-top record with a hundred parts," he said, per Noise 11. "We've made those records. This one had to sound like a slick machine. Trim the fat. Yeah, there are those harmonies and extra guitar bits. But a big part of the writing was knowing what a song didn't need."
