UNLV Women and BYU Men Earn Wins In Close Dual Meets

UNLV and BYU split wins in their dual meet on Friday with the UNLV women beating BYU by just over 30 points while the BYU men came out on top by nearly 60.

    Women’s Recap

    The UNLV women were led by a quartet of double-event winners in their 156.5 point win over BYU, who scored 124.5 points.

    They started with a win in the 400 medley relay with the team of Halayna Montrichard (54.83), Brinkley Hallgren (1:02.90), Maria Fernanda Mendez Guerra (52.43), Erika Carlson (48.71) swimming 3:38.87 to touch a second-and-a-half ahead of the BYU ‘A’ team’s time of 3:40.29.

    Erika Carlson and Maria Fernanda Mendez Guerra both went on to win both of their individual events as well. Carlson took the 200 free in 1:46.36 and the 100 free in 49.30. Her 200 free time was just off her lifetime best of 1:46.05 from the 2025 Mountain West Championships, and her 100 free time was just off her best of 48.98.

    Mendez Guerra took the top spot in the 50 free at 22.95, and tied for 1st in the 100 fly in 53.96. In the 50, she was just off her season best of 22.84 from the ASU vs UNLV meet at the beginning of October. Her 100 fly was also just off her season best time of 53.25 from the same meet.

    Ava Olson swept the distance events for the Rebels. She won the 1000 in 9:51.82, a new personal best time, dropping five seconds from her previous best of 9:56.22 from the opening split of her 1650 at the Mountain West Championships.

    In the 500, Olson touched in 4:52.93 for the win. She was seven hundredths faster than the 4:52.99 she swam at UNLV’s meet with AUS, and was about six seconds off her lifetime best of 4:46.85 from the Mountain West Championships.

    Grace Wharton was the final two event winner. She started with a win in the 200 backstroke at 1:58.77 to be the only person under 2:00 in the event. This swim was a new season best, dropping from the 1:59.62 she set against ASU, but was about a second off her lifetime best of 1:57.44 from the Minnesota Invite. She also won the 400 IM with her 3rd fastest swim ever of 4:18.41. Her lifetime best is 4:16.41 from the Mountain West Championships.

    Dominika Trentkiewicz (100 back- 54.32) and Rachel Wigginton (200 fly- 1:59.67) were UNLV’s other individual event winners.

    The BYU women’s team won a few events, including the final relay. The team of Haylee Tiffany (23.37), Taylor Bennett (23.07), Lily Flint (23.01), Tatum Cooley (22.42) touched in 1:31.87 to touch half-a-second ahead of UNLV’s ‘A’ relay time of 1:32.34.

    The Cougars also took both breaststroke events with Lucy Warnick winning the 100 in 1:02.26 and Brinley Knoll winning the 200 in 2:17.42. BYU has a history of strong breaststrokers with Mackenzie Lung finishing 7th at last year’s NCAA Championships in the 100 and 2nd in the 200.

    Sarah Eliason tied with Mendez Guerra for the win in the 100 fly at 53.96, a new season best time for her and just two tenths of fher lifetime best of 53.72.

    They ended the meet with a win in the 3-Meter diving event, the only diving event contested, with Brooklyn Goeckeritz‘s score of 296.25 taking the top spot.

    Men’s Recap

    The BYU men doubled UNLV’s individual swimming event wins, walking home with eight titles to the Rebels’ four. They also won both relays and the one diving event.

    The Cougars started with a win in the 400 medley relay with Bryce Broadhead (48.62), Peter Etzold (53.28), Max Kleinman (46.13), Joshua Reed (43.03) coming together to swim 3:11.06, winning by more than a second over UNLV’s time of 3:12.36.

    Kleinman and Etzold also won individual events at the meet. Kleinman earned the top spot in the 100 fly at 47.56, which was about a second of the personal best 46.70 he swam at the Intermountain Shootout at the beginning of October.

    Etzold won the 100 breast in 53.71, a new season best time. He also finished 2nd in the 200 breast to teammate Tyler Edlefsen‘s 1:58.47.

    Edlefsen also won the 400 IM for BYU in 3:52.79. Both swims were new season best times for him.

    The Cougars had another two event winner in transfer Easton Mousser thanks to his distance event sweep. He swam 9:11.45 in the 1000, which was about two seconds off the 9:09.76 he swam at the beginning of October. In the 500, he touched in 4:27.72, which was also an add from his season best time of 4:25.08.

    Tanner Nelson (200 free- 1:35.73) Mattia Reina (200 fly- 1:45.39), and Marti Llop (3-Meter diving- 321.53) rounded out the individual event wins for the Cougars.

    The Cougars also won the 200 freestyle relay with Tanner Edwards (20.28), Joshua Reed (19.71), Tanner Nelson (19.94), Max Kleinman (19.05) swam 1:18.98 to come in less than three tenths ahead of UNLV.

    The Rebels won four events over the course of the meet, two of which came from sprinter Bryon Huey with his sweep of the sprint free events. In the 50, he swam a season best 19.25 to drop six hundredths from the 19.31 he swam against ASU last month.

    His 100 free of 43.65 was just two hundredths off his lifetime best of 43.62 which he swam at the 2023 and 2024 Western Athletic Conference Championships.

    Wikus Potgieter won the 100 back in 47.67, a half-second slower than the 47.15 he swam to lead off UNLV’s medley relay, and Tatsuki Inoue won the 200 back in 1:44.73, a new season best swim.
