As we all know, there are some matters of concern about the extent to which the Chicago Cubs spend commensurate with revenue, market size, and brand identity. I’m not about to throw stones without at least some measure of humility.
But there’s a nine-figure chasm between the Cubs’ alleged parsimony and that deployed by clubs like the Pittsburgh Pirates and Miami Marlins. Two clubs that have been the subject of grievance(s?) by the MLB Players Association for how little they actually spend.
So you’ll forgive my chuckles when I see a report like this:
The Marlins and Pirates are telling agents they'd like to be aggressive and spend a little bit, says @Ken_Rosenthal."That can be in free agency, or it can be in the matter of taking on salaries in trades." pic.twitter.com/R5aAqrIVa2
— Foul Territory (@FoulTerritoryTV) November 11, 2025WATCH OUT! THE PIRATES AND MARLINS ARE ABOUT TO GO CRAZY! THEY MIGHT SPEND $5 … NO! $10 MILLION!!!
In all seriousness, here’s the thing you have to remember about these two clubs: annually, the Pirates and Marlins are two of the most aggressively criticized clubs for not spending the substantial revenue-sharing money they receive from the larger market clubs. Those criticisms come not only from the players, but also from those same larger market club owners, who are effectively putting cash directly in the pockets of other owners.
So why am I extra dubious about a report like this coming out from the GM Meetings? With the Pirates and Marlins totally trying to spread the word that they’re ready to spend? Because the next 12 months, ahead of the Collective Bargaining Agreement expiration, are going to be replete with fighting about the financial state of the game. The CBA governs not only the relationship between the players and the owners, but also the owners, themselves. Teams that (allegedly) pocket revenue-sharing money are going to be getting it from all sides in these negotiations!
The real question is whether the Pirates and Marlins will finally start spending in such a way as to convince the players and other owners that they’re serious about using dollars to compete. And even if they did it for a single offseason, would that help steer the upcoming negotiations in a way that could soften whatever blow is coming? I tend to doubt it on both fronts, but we’ll see. The chatter is starting, at least.
