Kate Middleton knows the value of staying active, but on Armistice Day, she learned firsthand from 100-year-old veteran Bill Redston just how far dedication to fitness can go.
On Tuesday, November 11, the 43-year-old Princess of Wales attended a Service of Remembrance at the National Memorial Arboretum to mark Armistice Day. Following the ceremony, Kate met several veterans who had served during World War II.
One of the most memorable moments came when she knelt to chat with Redston. According to PA reporter Stephanie Wareham, Kate asked him about the secret to living a long life.
Redston credited his long life to prioritizing fitness, surprising Kate when she learned he ran the London Marathon at 65 and the New York City Marathon the following year. While she may not have run a marathon, the royal maintains her own routine through tennis and cold-water swimming.

Kate also spoke with Geoffrey Spencer, a Royal Air Force veteran. In a video shared by Wareham, she jokingly admitted that her 12-year-old son, Prince George, “knows more about aircraft than I do.”
At the ceremony, Princess Kate paused for a moment of silence before laying a wreath accompanied by a handwritten note. The message read, “In memory of those who made the ultimate sacrifice, we will remember them.”
For her appearance, the Princess of Wales added a red poppy pin to her black ensemble and matching hat. The poppy has been a symbol of remembrance since 1921, honoring military members who died in conflicts. It is particularly associated with Remembrance Day on November 11 in the U.K. and Commonwealth nations.
Although members of the British royal family traditionally attend Armistice Day ceremonies at the National Memorial Arboretum, this year marked Kate’s first visit. From time to time, royal spouses step in to represent the family — last year, Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh, attended alone.
