‘80s Rocker Who Collaborated With Queen’s Brian May Dies at 65

Richard Darbyshire, the singer best known as the frontman of the 1980s pop band Living In A Box, has died. He was 65.

Darbyshire’s family confirmed his death to the BBC, saying, “We are all very sad, but his memory and songs will live on.” No cause of death was given.

Formed in Sheffield, England, Living In A Box broke out in 1987 with their self-titled debut single, a synth-driven anthem that became a worldwide hit and cracked the Top 20 on the U.S. charts. The group followed it with two more U.K. Top 10 hits, including the soulful ballad “Room in Your Heart.”

Known for his smooth, expressive vocals, Darbyshire gave the trio a distinctive sound amid the booming British pop scene of the late ‘80s. For their second album, Gatecrashing, the band even enlisted Queen guitarist Brian May, who played on the track “Blow the House Down,” which became their final Top 10 hit in 1989.

Darbyshire left the group later that year amid record label changes and creative differences. He went on to release a solo album, Better to Have Lost, in 1994 and wrote songs for artists including Lisa Stansfield, Jennifer Rush, and Level 42.

Born in Stockport, Cheshire, Darbyshire spent part of his youth in Japan before studying English Literature at Oxford University. Before forming Living In A Box, he performed with the Manchester band Zu Zu Sharks, which included future Adam and the Ants bassist Gary Tibbs.

In later years, he held songwriting workshops in London and remained a respected voice in British pop. Living In A Box re-formed in 2016 with a new vocalist and continue to tour today.

Darbyshire is survived by his wife, vocal coach Sonia Jones.
