Alfonso Ribeiro once told Parade that Dancing with the Stars is 30% a dance competition and 70% a reality show. And the latter certainly comes into play when it comes to the eliminations on the hit ABC reality series. Over 20 years, we've seen a good number of shocking boots, either frontrunners cut down in their prime or struggling stars who somehow made it through to the next round.
Many of those eliminations were overseen by Tom Bergeron, who will be making his highly anticipated return to the ballroom as guest judge in tonight's 20th birthday celebration. So, it was only natural we ask him, across all 28 seasons he helmed before his shocking firing in 2020, if there was any particular result that stunned him the most.

"It's funny you're asking about eliminations," he replies. "The thing that shocked me most was a win. Bobby Bones."
Radio personality Bobby Bones was a contestant on Season 27 in 2018. Partnered with Sharna Burgess, while he did show improvement throughout the season, it was clear he was outmatched in the skill department by the rest of the cast. The former American Idol mentor would consistently be towards the bottom of the leaderboard, hitting the last spot in the final two weeks. But Bones's loyal fanbase cared not for the dance elements, as he beat out more successful dancers like Milo Manheim and Evanna Lynch to take home the win.
"It's like Andy Richter this season," Bergeron continues. "He's charming and has such a big heart. Do I think he's going to win? No. Do I think he's bringing a quality to the show that epitomizes what the show is? Absolutely. But Bobby Bones was the first time it was like, 'Ouch.' No disrespect to Bobby. He would probably say the same thing."

"Ouch" would be putting the general reaction to Bones's win mildly. Fans were immediately outraged by the result, taking to social media to express their surprise and frustration. Even seven years later, Bones is regarded as the worst winner in DWTS history. And, beginning the next year, the show made an effort to incorporate the judges' scores as a greater percentage of the final vote tally, in an effort to give a greater boost to those who are performing well.
Still, Bones taking home the Mirror Ball trophy helped stoke the flames of an argument that is still made among DWTS fans this day, most recently with the surprising success of Andy Richter on this season. Some viewers want a push to get rid of the popular vote altogether, leaving the results purely in the judges' hands based on the scores. But Bergeron adamantly feels the show should never make that change.
"I think that level of participation is really important," he says. "It underscores that the show is live."
We'll see Bergeron get a chance to give out his own scores for a change tonight on the Dancing with the Stars 20th birthday celebration, live at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on ABC and Disney+.
