ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Monroe County spent more than $13 million in 2024 investigating child abuse claims that turned out to be unfounded, according to a new report released Monday from HOPE-585 and The Children’s Agenda.
The report shows in 2024, 76% of CPS investigations out of 6,768 were ultimately dismissed, but still caused lasting harm to children and families.
Advocates say it’s time to rethink how we support families, urging lawmakers and mandated reporters to invest in communities rather than defaulting to CPS calls.
“This is why the Supporting Families Together is so important, because you can’t tell reporters…remove the penalties to really free them up to do what the training is encouraging them to do, which is support families,” said Dr. Ashley Cross, executive director of HOPE 585.
