Sally Kirkland, the Oscar-nominated actress whose performance in Anna earned her a Golden Globe and a permanent place in indie film history, died at the age of 84 on Tuesday, November 11.
TMZ confirmed the news just two days after her representative, Michael Greene, revealed that she had entered hospice care in Palm Springs.
Kirkland’s team and friends shared a message on her GoFundMe page on November 7, thanking fans for their love and support as she transitioned to hospice care.
“Thank you for all your love and support,” read the post from the account’s manager, listed only as Friends of Sally. “Sally is grateful for your kindness and love. Sally is on hospice now and is resting comfortably. Please hold and send the light for Sally.”

Kirkland had endured a series of severe health setbacks over the past year, including fractures to her neck, wrist and hip, followed by multiple infections and a fall that left her with broken ribs and a foot injury.
“Hi: Sally sends her love to everyone. It has been a challenging few months for Sally as her health continues to struggle,” an October 2 update read. “She had a fall in the shower, when she was left unattended, injuring her ribs and foot, along with cuts and bruises. Sally is now receiving 24/7 care in a specialized facility that is providing wonderful safety and care. We are continuing to raise money to cover the gaps between income and care costs. Thank you for all the love, support, and care for Sally.”
Her representative confirmed that she was under hospice supervision when she passed, suggesting her death followed a period of prolonged illness rather than a sudden event.
A Storied Career
Born in New York City in 1941, Kirkland began her acting career on the New York stage and trained under Lee Strasberg before pivoting into film and television. Her breakout role came with Anna in 1987, which earned her an Academy Award nomination and a Golden Globe win.
She went on to appear in Private Benjamin, JFK, The Player, Bruce Almighty and more.
