ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Roberts Wesleyan’s men’s and women’s soccer teams are gearing up for a potentially historic weekend. Both teams have a chance to secure their first East Coast Conference titles, a milestone for the college’s soccer programs.
This past weekend, senior defender Cami Brescia scored an overtime game-winner, advancing the women’s team into the East Coast Conference final. “And it was just a super exciting moment that I was able to share with my team,” Brescia said. “And I wouldn’t have to do it with anyone else.”
The men’s team experienced a similar triumph, as junior Archie Murphy scored an OT game-winner as well, with senior midfielder Jack Hopson expressing joy over their advancement. “Just pure joy,” Hopson said. “I mean, everyone going to the corner, surrounding Archie to score that goal.”
Both teams ended the regular season with 10 wins and now face formidable opponents in their respective finals. Women’s head coach Bobby McColl acknowledged the challenge ahead. “So it’s going to be a tough game, we’re going to have to be our best,” McColl said.
The men’s team will play Queens College while the women will play Mercy University. Both teams are the one-seeds in their respective conference tournament.
Senior midfielder Luke Hanes emphasized the team’s resilience. “We pushed for that resolve no matter what happens,” Hanes said. “If we go down a goal, two goals, we’ll push back whenever, we’re never out of the game.”
Neither team has ever won an East Coast Conference title. In fact, the men’s team has never reached the conference championship final, while the women’s team hasn’t been there in a decade.
Men’s head coach Scott Reber highlighted the significance of this opportunity. “Huge,” Reber said. “I mean, all these guys are staying and shoulders of those that have gone before them, right?”
Reber added that achieving this milestone together would be meaningful for both teams and the college. “It’d be great for men’s soccer, for women’s soccer, for Roberts as a whole,” Reber said. “Certainly. I think both teams have worked hard.”
The women will play on Sunday in Dobbs Ferry, NY, kickoff is scheduled for 1 pm. The men will play on Saturday in Flushing, NY, kickoff is scheduled for 7 pm.
