Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Makenna Sherman from Las Vegas, Nevada, has verbally committed to swim and study at the University of Utah beginning in 2027-28. She was a “Best of the Rest” distance freestyle recruit on our Way Too Early list of top girls’ swimmers from the high school class of 2027. She told SwimSwam:

“I really loved everything about the University of Utah, from the team and coaches, to how beautiful the surroundings are.”

Sherman is a junior at Faith Lutheran High School. She swims for her high school holds the school records in the 200 IM, 200 medley relay, and 400 free relay. At the 2025 Nevada High School 3A State Championships, she placed 4th in both the 200 IM (2:08.77) and 100 fly (58.58). She clocked PBs in those events (2:06.56 and 57.34) a week earlier at the Regional Championships, where she also swam a lifetime best in the 50 back (27.43) leading off the Faith Lutheran medley relay.

Sherman moved from Sandpipers of Nevada to Las Vegas Swim Club at the beginning of the 2025-26 short-course season. Her most notable successes have come in open water swimming – she won the junior 7.5km title at the USA Swimming 2025 Open Water National and Junior Championships and was selected to the National Junior Team for open water. She told SwimSwam: “I recently competed in Italy, as a team USA National Junior team member, at the World Aquatics Open Water Cup. It was my first 10k and mixed relay. It was an incredible experience and I was honored to represent Team USA!”

In the pool, she competed at 2024 Winter Juniors West and placed 14th in the mile with a PB of 16:45.54. A week later, she went lifetime bests in the 500 free (4:56.10), 1000 free 10:06.82), 100 back (59.78), 200 IM (2:10.87), and 400 IM (4:30.46) at CA/NV Sectionals. She further improved her 500 free (4:53.92) and 1000 free (9:56.23) times and added a PB in the 400 IM (4:26.69) at Justin Sectionals in March.

Sherman told SwimSwam, “Aside from [swimming], I have Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis, which is why I originally started swimming when I was diagnosed as a baby. I always hope that I can help motivate or encourage other kids who might be facing a challenge or health issue to realize that we can do anything we set our minds to! I never let my diagnosis hinder me, but instead let it remind me just how strong I am!”

    Best SCY times:

    500 free – 4:53.92 1000 free – 9:56.23 1650 free – 16:45.54

At the time of her commitment, she wrote on social media:

“I am so blessed to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at the University of Utah!! I would like to thank my family, coaches, teammates, and the University of Utah staff for supporting me through everything. GO UTES!! ”
