Five local teams set to compete in girls volleyball state tournaments

Local programs seemingly always factor prominently into the girls volleyball state title chases in mid-November at the Denver Coliseum.

This weekend should be no different.

The Colorado High School Activities released Class 1A-5A state tournament brackets Monday.

Five local teams are set to compete in four classifications.

Windsor (18-7) is the second seed in the 12-team, double-elimination 4A tournament.

The Wizards will receive a first-round bye before playing in a second-round game around 6:30 p.m. Thursday. Windsor will face whichever team emerges from a match around 12:30 p.m. Thursday between No. 7 Berthoud (24-1) and No. 10 Green Mountain (18-7).

The third round, and numerous lower-bracket matches, will take place Friday.

Lower bracket third-round matches are set for Saturday morning, followed by the championship semifinals and the finals, which are slated to begin at 6 p.m.

University (20-5) is the third seed in 4A. It will also receive a first-round bye before taking on No. 6 Mullen (19-6) or No. 11 Cheyenne Mountain (15-10) in the second round about 5 p.m. Thursday.

Eaton (21-4) is the third seed in 3A. After a first-round bye, the Reds will take on No. 6 Bayfield (18-7) or No. 11 Aspen (20-5) in Round 2 around 5 p.m. Thursday.

Prairie (18-6) snagged the 10th seed in the 1A competition. The Mustangs will face seventh-seeded Hi-Plains (19-5) around 12:30 p.m. Thursday with the winner moving on to face second-seeded McClave (22-2) in the second round around 6:30 p.m.

Most of the action on Thursday, Friday and Saturday takes place after the Tribune’s copy deadlines for the next day’s paper.
