Prince William Reveals the Growing ‘Tense Issue’ With His 12-Year-Old Son George

Royals … they’re just like us! Prince William opened up about an ongoing issue with his pre-teen son, Prince George, and the word "relatable" certainly comes to mind.

During a Monday, November 10, interview with Brazilian TV host Luciano Huck, Prince William, 43, discussed the possibility of getting George, who turned 12 years old in July, a cell phone.

“Our children don’t have phones. I think when George moves on to secondary school, then maybe he will have a phone then — that has no internet access,” Prince William, who also shares children Charlotte and Louis with wife Kate Middleton, revealed.

Secondary school in the U.K. refers to the stage of education for students ages 11 to 16, covering Years 7 through 11.

While Prince William and Kate Middleton, 43, have remained confident in their decision to keep George phone-free, it hasn’t been easy.

“To be honest, it’s getting to the point where it’s becoming a little bit of a tense issue,” the proud parent admitted. “But I think he understands why. We communicate why we don’t think it’s right.”

Given their family’s status, not just in the U.K. but around the world, Prince William and Kate Middleton believe they are doing their part to protect George, largely from social media.

“I think it’s the internet access that I have a problem with,” Prince William explained. “I think children can access too much stuff they don’t need to see online. So having a phone and text message, the old sort of brick phone as they call them, I think that’s fine.”

Prince William and Kate Middleton, who tied the knot in April 2011, welcomed Prince George in July 2013. They later welcomed their daughter, Princess Charlotte, in May 2015, and lastly, their youngest son, Prince Louis, in April 2018.
