Immigration enforcement tensions rose across the Chicago area over the weekend.
A Department of Homeland Security spokesperson said agents were shot at on Saturday during an operation near 26th Street and Kedzie Avenue in the Little Village neighborhood.
On Monday, DHS told NBC Chicago they arrested an undocumented man from Mexico in relation to the shooting. Authorities said he has a prior conviction for unlawful use of a weapon, although they hadn’t released his identity as of Monday evening.
Meanwhile, video taken by a local pastor and other bystanders show flash bangs, chemical plumes and agents walking around with weapons in Little Village. DHS said protesters blocked their vehicles in.
Border Patrol Commander Gregory Bovino was also seen in the videos with a tear gas cannister in hand. The video does not show him using it.
About a mile away outside the Sam’s Club in Cicero, another enforcement operation unfolded.
The Veraza family said they were on their way to shop there when they saw traffic jams, heard whistles and realized there was an operation underway.
“I’m like, ‘You know what?’ There’s no point of us shopping if it’s going to be chaos,” said father, Rafael Veraza. “I was like, ‘Eventually let’s just leave and we can come back.'”
He said as they were turning around, federal agents sprayed his vehicle with pepper spray.
“I had my window down, basically I had got sprayed all over my face,” Veraza said.
In a video taken by his wife, you can see a pickup truck pass the Verazas while someone sprays an orange substance through their window. Their one-year-old daughter, Arianna, was inside.
DHS said they did not use pepper spray at Sam’s Club.
This all comes just two days after federal judge Sarah Ellis issued a temporary injunction barring federal agents from using chemicals unless there is an immediate threat.
