A 29-year-old Evanston woman was identified as the driver killed when another vehicle lost control on an icy road and crashed into her head-on in another northern suburb, officials said.
Bria Allen was killed in a serious Gurnee crash that also wounded a 29-year-old passenger in her vehicle and the passenger’s 5-year-old and 8-month-old children, according to the Lake County Coroner’s office.
The crash happened just before 9 p.m. on Grand Avenue over Interstate 94 in Gurnee, where police said a 2024 Chevrolet Suburban is believed to have struck a patch of ice while change lanes on the westbound side of the roadway. The suburban then lost control, crossed over the center median and entered the eastbound lanes of traffic colliding “head-on” with Allen’s 2007 Ford Focus.
The collision sent the Focus off the roadway before it came to a stop in a nearby ditch.
A third vehicle, a Toyota Highlander, was struck by debris from the collision and suffered a flat tire.
Allen was pronounced dead at the scene and an autopsy found she died of “blunt force injuries as a result of the crash,” according to the coroner’s office.
A 29-year-old woman from Waukegan, who was inside the Focus, and the passenger’s 5-year-old son and 8-month-old daughter were taken to area hospitals with injuries from the crash, but their conditions were not immediately known.
The driver and passengers inside the Chevrolet and those inside the Toyota Highlander were uninjured.
The Major Crash Assistance Team was called to investigate “due to the seriousness” of the crash, officials said. The crash remains under investigation.
The Lake County area was under a winter storm warning, with a heavy band of snow hitting the region hard Sunday night and into Monday morning. The crash was one of several reported in connection with the wintry burst.
