Villanova University’s men’s swimming and diving team toppled Providence College in a crushing victory on Friday. The two teams raced in short course meters, as the Wildcats racked up 187 points, winning all but one event, to decisively beat their conference rival’s 73 points.

    Villanova prevailed in the first 13 events of the meet, kicking it off with a victory in the 200 medley relay. The team of Cole Gorsuch (27.31), Hugh Boris (29.52), Zach Sutter (24.84) and Max Kunisaki (23.38) threw down a time of 1:45.05, charging into the wall almost two seconds ahead of Providence’s A team (1:46.94).

    The Villanova freshmen delivered big time for the Wildcats, collectively picking up five individual victories over the course of the meet.

    Boris swept the breaststroke events, winning the 100 breast in 1:05.79 and the 200 breast in 2:22.98. Kunisaki also picked up a double victory, touching first in the 50 free (23.81) and the 100 fly (56.55).

    Fellow freshman Carter Gray charged into the top spot in the 200 IM, touching in 2:09.78, after taking 3rd in the 100 breast in 1:08.01.

    Sophomore Owen Nye came out on top in the distance events; he won the 400 free in 4:11.68 and the 800 free in 8:40.50.

    Providence’s lone victory of the day came during the last race of the meet, as the Friars pulled ahead to win the 400 free relay. The team of Jake Stachowicz (54.31), Thomas Bowers (53.67), Aidan Puk (54.08) and Nicholas Menendez-Featherstone (53.39) posted a time of 3:35.45 to win by over five seconds, although all three of Villanova’s relay teams were exhibition swims.

    Puk was one of the Friars’ top contributors, as he also turned in a runner-up finish in the 200 fly (2:12.31) earlier in the meet.

    Providence posted three other 2nd-place finishes over the course of the meet. Gabe Hawkins was the runner-up in the 200 free (1:57.12) while Jack Nowak placed 2nd in the 100 back (1:00.20).

    The Friars’ relay team of Stachowicz (27.02), Erik Hoie (30.21), Nathan Thayer (25.81) and Bowers (23.90) also took 2nd in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:46.94.

    The Villanova Wildcats return to action on Nov. 12 to face Rider University, while the Providence Friars are off from competition until the Harold Anderson Invitational from Nov. 20-23.
