Rolling Stones Icon Keith Richards Could Hardly Stand the Sight of This Legendary Guitarist for Years

While some highly talented individuals could be considered their own worst critics, when it comes to Keith Richards, he's shared plenty of harsh opinions about his esteemed peers over the years, too. In the case of one fellow guitar legend, Richards once said the two basically couldn't bear to be in the same room together...even though the Rolling Stones icon had plenty of respect for the other axe man.

In a 1985 interview with Spin, Richards opened up about his relationship with Jeff Beck, considered by many to be one of the best rock guitarists of all time.

“Guitar players, for me, are the hardest ones to know, all this professional s—t going on," Richards told Spin in 1985.

“Very unprofessional, really," Richards added. "I mean, Jeff Beck and I, for years, could hardly stand the sight of each other. It’s only been over the last few years that that’s all fallen by the wayside. Thank God it’s all over and we can sit around and have a drink and talk. That’s a guy I admire a lot. He’s a great player.”

While Richards didn't elaborate on the nature of his beef with Beck, in an interview with Guitar World in 2023 — the year Beck died at the age of 78 from bacterial meningitis — he explained why Beck never joined the Rolling Stones (as it was once rumored he might).

“We felt that Jeff had his own furrow to plow and that he was not a team man,” Richards said. “He was a soloist to the max. He was such an individualist. It wouldn’t have worked with the Stones at all. We’re all about teamwork.”

“But don’t get me wrong, he was a tremendous player," Richards continued. "The odd times we got together, I was always amazed by the stuff that he did with his tremolo bar. He was one of the best, man, and he’s going to be missed.”

Keith Richards slammed David Bowie for 'posing'

Other musicians have received decidedly less glowing reviews from Richards at times, including the late musical icons David Bowie and Prince.

“It’s all pose," Richards once said of Bowie, per Far Out magazine. "It’s all f—king posing. It’s nothing to do with music. He knows it, too. I can’t think of anything else he’s done that would make my hair stand up.”

Of Prince, who opened for the Rolling Stones in 1981, Richards said, “Prince has to find out what it means to be a prince."

"That’s the trouble with conferring a title on yourself before you’ve proved it," he continued. "His attitude when he opened for us…was insulting to our audience. You don’t try to knock off the headline like that when you’re playing a Stones crowd. He’s a prince who thinks he’s a king already. Good luck to him.”

As it turned out, of course, Prince didn't need any luck from Richards, as he and Bowie both were immensely successful. Perhaps Richards would offer a different take on their respective talents today.
