This year’s I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! line-up is a bit of a damp squib. Where are all the controversial politicians to rile us up? Where is the ageing Hollywood legend who has no idea what they’re in for? It’s all soap stars (EastEnders’ Shona McCarty and Emmerdale’s Lisa Riley), unknown social media stars (who on Earth is “Angry Ginge”?) and ghosts of decades past (shockingly, Kelly Brook and Ruby Wax haven’t already been in the jungle).
But there is one impressive booking – someone so interesting that Ant and Dec might as well hand him the King of the Jungle flower crown now: Jack Osbourne.
In any other year, Jack might also have been a dud casting, dismissed by viewers as a nepo baby desperate to hang on to some relevance (or make some cash). But it’s only been three months since his father, Prince of Darkness Ozzy Osbourne, died, and with that sad news still fresh in everyone’s in mind, getting the 40-year-old into the jungle is a coup for ITV.
To be cynical, the recent death of his dad automatically endears him to the public. Despite his sometimes-deviant ways, we collectively loved Ozzy, and his death was big news whether you were a Black Sabbath fan or not. The images of his wife Sharon crying during his funeral procession in his native Birmingham, flanked by their children – Amy, Kelly and Jack – were heartbreaking. There is already a lot of goodwill and kindness towards the Osbournes in the wake of their loss – the sort of kindness that will easily translate into I’m a Celeb votes.

A man who grew up in the gravitational pull of someone as eccentric as Ozzy will probably have some great stories to tell. Good campfire chat is paramount in I’m a Celeb. If he spills on what it was really like to grow up with a rockstar and one of the brashest women on Earth, of course, we’ll want to keep him in there.
We have, admittedly, already had some insight into how he grew up via the family’s first of its kind fly-on-the-wall reality series, The Osbournes on MTV. Jack was just 16 when the show premiered in 2002 and wasn’t exactly the picture of a happy teenager – he had struggles with drugs and alcohol (before becoming sober at 17), he had physically fights with Kelly, partied on school nights and purposely sent his parents over the edge (quite the achievement when your parents are Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne).

Getting this opportunity to see how Jack has changed, grown up, and matured is rare when it comes to celebrities who have been famous since they were kids. As a father of four children himself, Jack is now on the other side of parenting and that sort of reflective growth is catnip for anyone tuning in to I’m a Celeb to see how he’s getting on – particularly following the death of his own father. It’s this sort of life experience that makes a strong yet vulnerable campmate, who knows their own strengths and weaknesses. Well, that and the fact that Jack has already completed two jungle expeditions in his own spare time.
Any celeb who has taken part in previous years will tell you just how transformative and character-building the show can be. After the year and indeed the upbringing that Jack has had, the timing couldn’t be more perfect.
‘I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!’ starts on Sunday at 9pm on ITV1
