Food Network Star Alex Guarnaschelli Says ‘Do Not Play With This Sacred American Sandwich’

Alex Guarnaschelli is a chef, TV legend, and cookbook queen — but she’s also dead serious about her hot dogs.

On Sunday, November 9, the 56-year-old Food Network icon hopped on Instagram with a bold PSA: “Do not play with this sacred American sandwich, the hot dog.”

She continued: “Simply slather that in mustard and sauerkraut, and enjoy. So good, [it] reminds me of a New York City street dog, which I love. [The] bun is slightly dried out from the heat of the hot dogs, but not really toasted, and perfect bun-to-dog ratio. Dig in.”

The caption asked, “Are you team ketchup, mustard, or both?” and the comments section exploded — full-blown condiment chaos, hot takes, and sandwich semantics.

“Turkey sandwich, corn beef sandwich, ham and cheese sandwich, hotdog sandwich? Never heard of it,” one person wrote.

“Love you girl. But first of all, a hot dog is not a sandwich. It’s a hot dog,” another said.

“Laughing at everyone who doesn’t think it’s a sandwich ?? *silly rabbits*,” chimed in a third.

“Sandwich??? WTF did you say?” someone else added.

From there, the toppings war began. “Mustard, ketchup, potato sticks, and Pikliz ?,” one fan bragged. “100%. Maille Dijon + roasted garlic sauerkraut at my house,” another flexed. Others dropped their regional favorites — “Here in NC it’s slaw, chili, mustard, and onions,” one said — while someone else listed off their full lineup: “Mustard, diced onion, relish, dill pickle slice, tomato slices, sport peppers, celery salt…”

This isn’t the first time Guarnaschelli has gone to bat for her beloved hot dog. In fact, it’s not even the first time she’s sparked the “is it or isn’t it a sandwich” debate. Back in 2015, she jumped on X (then Twitter) writing, “In my humble opinion, a hot dog is a sandwich.”

In 2018, she doubled down when Food Network asked fans to “settle the debate: is a hot dog a sandwich?” Jumping straight into the comments, the Iron Chef declared, "A hot dog is a sandwich.”

Two years later, she took her stance to Instagram with a cheeky post that read, “How I felt when I realized that a hot dog is, indeed, a sandwich,” alongside a clip from Goodfellas to really drive her point home.

By 2021, Guarnaschelli had fully leaned into her role as the internet’s unofficial hot dog commissioner. “Ketchup on hot dog sandwiches is a no,” she warned followers that August. And when fellow chef Michael Symon declared in 2022 that a hot dog counts as a sandwich, she replied in all caps: “PREACH IT MICHAEL.”
