Around the NFL: Lions Roll, Vikings Stumble, Comebacks, Upset, More

The Detroit Lions didn’t just bounce back from a frustrating loss last week — they exploded. Behind a rejuvenated Jared Goff and an offense firing on every cylinder, Detroit rolled into Washington and buried the Commanders 44-22 in a game that never felt close.

Lions Roll the Commanders; Dan Campbell Takes Over Playcalling

It was the first meeting between the two teams since last season’s playoff shocker, when Washington stunned Detroit in the divisional round. This time, the Lions made sure there’d be no repeat.

Goff played one of his cleanest games of the year, completing 25 of 33 passes for 320 yards and three touchdowns without taking a single sack. That last number mattered most; after absorbing 14 sacks over the previous four games, Detroit finally kept its quarterback upright, and the offense immediately looked like itself again.

Running back Jahmyr Gibbs delivered a star-level performance with 172 total yards and three touchdowns, slicing apart a Washington defense that never found its footing. Receivers Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams each found the end zone as Detroit piled up more than 500 yards of offense and ran for 212. And for the ultimate sign of dominance: punter Jack Fox never stepped onto the field.

Washington, meanwhile, was forced to rely on quarterback Marcus Mariota with Jayden Daniels still out. The veteran filled in admirably, completing 16 of 22 passes for 213 yards and two scores, but the Commanders’ defense had no counterpunch for Detroit’s offensive onslaught. A 3-7 season hit another low as Washington surrendered points on every Lions possession.

The real subplot, though, might be what was happening on Detroit’s sideline. Head Coach Dan Campbell appeared to have a larger role in offensive play-calling, often wearing glasses and locked into the call sheet. FOX’s sideline report noted that Campbell and his staff “wanted to mix things up” — and the results spoke loudly. After weeks of inefficiency under coordinator John Morton, the Lions offense finally looked loose, explosive, and entirely in rhythm.

Ravens Keep Rolling While Vikings Keep Searching in a 27-19 Loss at Home

The Minnesota Vikings walked into Sunday hoping to validate last week’s offensive progress. Instead, they got a full dose of Baltimore’s surging momentum. The Ravens handled Minnesota 27-19 at U.S. Bank Stadium, extending their winning streak to three and dropping the Vikings into another week of hard questions about execution, consistency, and quarterback play.

Baltimore didn’t overwhelm the Vikings with fireworks, but they didn’t have to. Quarterback Lamar Jackson was steady, going 17 of 29 for 176 yards and a short touchdown to tight end Mark Andrews, while running back Derrick Henry hammered out 75 yards and climbed into 15th on the NFL’s all-time rushing list. It was the Ravens defense that controlled the afternoon, muddying Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy’s reads and making Minnesota’s operation look clunky from the opening drive.

McCarthy, who flashed promise last week, never found a rhythm. He completed just 20 of 42 passes and had two turnovers, including a pair of interceptions that Baltimore quickly turned into field-position wins. Five of his throws were batted at the line. Six offensive penalties, most of them false starts, repeatedly sabotaged drives. Even receiver Justin Jefferson looked a step out of sync, and the Vikings’ play-calling leaned heavily on deep-ball hopes rather than sequencing the offense into a groove.

Meanwhile, the turnover magic that defined the Vikings’ defense last season has vanished. Minnesota generated none on Sunday and rarely put Baltimore behind schedule. Without early-down run-stops, they couldn’t force Jackson into mistakes or long-yardage pressure situations.

The Vikings mounted a late push to close the gap to one score, but the Ravens never looked threatened. Baltimore is finding its stride post-bye, averaging more than 28 points per game over the last three weeks. Minnesota, on the other hand, is still stuck in operational quicksand, waiting for an offense that looks clean, connected, and dangerous. Sunday made clear they’re not there yet.

    Extra Points

The Houston Texans erased a 19-point deficit on Sunday to earn a 36-29 comeback victory against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Jacksonville fell to 5-4 on the season, while Houston moved to 4-5, with both teams looking up at Indianapolis in the standings. Speaking of Indianapolis: The Colts cruised past the Atlanta Falcons in Berlin on the back of Jonathan Taylor, who rushed for 244 yards and scored three touchdowns, including an 83-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.

New Orleans Saints rookie quarterback Tyler Shough led the Saints to a 17-7 victory over the Carolina Panthers. Shough threw for 282 yards and two touchdowns, including a 62-yarder to wide receiver Chris Olave. Matthew Stafford threw four touchdown passes as the Los Angeles Rams routed the San Francisco 49ers, 42-26, in Santa Clara on Sunday. The Rams moved to 7-2, while the battered and bruised 49ers fell to 6-4.

The Seahawks have won seven of eight since losing their season opener. DeMarcus Lawrence scored two touchdowns on defense for the Seahawks, and Mike McDonald’s defense looks as scary as Seattle envisioned when they hired him away from Baltimore.
