Lake effect snow showers in the Chicago area were leading to multiple spin-outs and crashes, with treacherous driving conditions expected for the Monday morning rush hour commute, including a major crash on DuSable Lake Shore Drive.
Around 6:30 a.m., NBC 5 traffic reporter Kye Martin said a multi-vehicle chain reaction crash had shut down DuSable Lake Shore Drive in Bronzeville. According to TrafficNet, the northbound lanes were closed before Oakwood Blvd. to 31st street, with traffic backing up from 53rd St.
The site added that the crash involves an overturned vehicle with an entrapment.
As snow continued to fall, treacherous conditions were also reported heading north to the Wisconsin state line, NBC 5 reporter Patrick Fazio said.
“It is hard to see where the lanes are now,” Fazio said, from the Waukegan area. “We’ve not seen many plows. You can see how covered the expressway is. In northern Lake County, roads are getting worse.”
Multiple other crashes and slide-offs were reported throughout the morning across the Chicago area, Martin said, including a semi-slide-off in Itasca.
Early Monday morning, as much as two to three inches of snow was falling per hour, with the chance for more lake effect snow through at least 9 a.m. in Lake County, Cook County and in northwest Indiana, the NBC 5 Storm Team said.
Overnight, the Illinois Department of Transportation warned the storm will vary a lot across the area.
“It might look fine when you leave, but a few miles away, heavy snow could be piling up fast,” IDOT said. “Snowplows will be out in full force by rush hour, but roads will still be slick.”
