Winter storm warning continues across Chicago area, with 6-12 inches of snow possible

A winter storm warning in the middle of fall was dumping heavy lake effect snow across a good chunk of northeastern Illinois early Monday morning, with as much as a foot of snow for some and just a touch for others.

“Heavier snow right near the lakefront,” NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Pete Sack said at 5:30 a.m. “Away from the lake, hardly a dusting.”

According to the National Weather Service, the winter storm warning was in effect for Lake and Kankakee Counties in Illinois, and Porter, Northern LaPorte and Porter Counties in Indiana until 9 a.m.

“Locally dangerous travel conditions due to lake effect snow expected,” the NWS warned. “Additional snow accumulations of 1 to 2 inches, with storm total snowfall of 4 to 8 inches east of Interstate 94 expected.”

In DuPage, Cook and Will Counties in Illinois, Kenosha County in Wisconsin and Newton and Dubois Counties in Indiana, there was a winter weather advisory until 12 p.m.

“Additional snow accumulations of 1 to 2 inches with storm total snowfall of 2 to 4 inches expected,” the NWS said, of those parts.

The NWS also warned of additional snow expected later this morning, as a lake effect snowband in Wisconsin moves southward.

“Plan on slippery road conditions,” the NWS said. “The hazardous conditions could impact the Monday morning commute.”

Spin-offs and slide-outs were already reported across Chicago area roadways, especially up north in Lake County. You can check to see the road conditions near you here.

“More snow up this way,” NBC 5 reporter Patrick Fazio said, reporting reporting from I-294 heading from Lake Forest to Waukegan. “And its still coming down. You can feel the tires slip a little bit more.”

Fazio added that the roads, though they’d been plowed and treated, were still snow-covered as flakes keep coming down.

By 6 a.m., road conditions to the north had worsened, Fazio said, as NBC 5’s Storm Chaser approaches the Wisconsin state line.

“It is hard to see where the lanes are now,” Fazio said. “We’ve not seen many plows. You can see how covered the expressway is. Northern Lake County, roads are getting worse.”

Much of the heavy snow and wintry conditions was confined to the lake front, NBC 5 storm Team Meteorologist Alicia Roman said.

“If you’re traveling this morning, its very treacherous, with low visibility,” Roman said.

The snow was expected to clear by the afternoon commute in northeast Illinois, Roman said, but there was still time to add to snowfall totals.

“Gusty lake effect snow is ongoing and will impact the morning commute,” the NWS said in a post on X. “Travel is not advised where the lake effect snow is occurring. Snow will gradually diminish from north to southeast through the morning.”
