ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Winter weather is on the way. We remain Green on the Threat Tracker, as no hazardous or impactful weather is expected, mainly due to the ground being too warm, but you’re definitely going to need your winter jacket, and you’re definitely going to see the first snowflakes of the season over the next few days.
Sunday will mostly be cold and wet. Rain showers will cover most of the region, before colder air wraps on in, turning the rain to snow first in the Niagara Frontier. This will be wet and heavy snow, and accumulation will mainly be on grassy surfaces and other vegetation. Only a few inches are expected in the Niagara Frontier today. Soil temperatures two inches down are in the mid 40s, which will make it very difficult for snow to build up on roads.
Eventually this afternoon the rain will transition to a wintry mix for Rochester. Areas west of Rochester will see more snow than rain, and areas east of Rochester will have to wait until overnight for snow. The hills of the Finger Lakes may also see some snow before nightfall. The sun sets at 4:52, then overnight snow showers will develop but mostly be constrained to the Route 390 corridor and areas west of it.
Later in the night, lake effect snow will develop, with small stringy bands developing off of Lake Ontario headed southward. These will be spotty light lake effect snow showers, and not much accumulation is expected with them. As Monday goes on, the wind will shift northwesterly, focusing the lake effect snow towards areas southeast of the lake.
This continues Monday night into Tuesday, and this will be the time of most accumulation for areas east of Rochester along Route 104. Tuesday the lake effect snow tapers off late in the morning, and may briefly return as a mix of rain and snow for the afternoon. Overall, no significant accumulations are expected, and the vast majority of accumulation will be on grassy surfaces. We’re keeping the threat tracker green for now, as roads may be wet, but they shouldn’t be snowy.
Winds will be breezy for the duration of the work week, meaning tomorrow and Tuesday’s 30 degree temperatures will feel even colder to the skin. We return to the 40 degree mark Wednesday through Friday, with mixed precipitation showers expected. We get a break in the precipitation on Saturday, but it will still be 10 degrees below normal.
