Syria’s transitional president, Ahmad al-Sharaa, said sanctions on Syria are in their final stages, calling for continued efforts until they are fully lifted.
Speaking on Sunday, 9 November, at a meeting with representatives of Syrian organizations in the United States, a day before his Monday meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump, al-Sharaa described the current moment as a “rare” opportunity that Syrians should seize.
Al-Sharaa believes Syria needs the efforts of its people to rebuild, stressing the importance of a spirit of cooperation among Syrians in the diaspora, and affirming that Syria will be built by the hands of its sons and daughters at home and abroad.
Al-Sharaa arrived in Washington on Saturday, 8 November, on an official visit to meet his American counterpart, accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Asaad al-Shibani.
During the meeting, Foreign Minister al-Shibani said that 2026 would be a year of development for Syria and that there would be no sanctions on the country, noting that the government will link the work of Syrian organizations in Washington to the process of rebuilding Syria.
He added that the ministry is working continuously and vigorously, in a way that differs from the foreign ministries of other countries.
Mohammad Alaa Ghanem, head of political affairs at the Syrian American Council, said the meeting covered a number of issues, including the role of the Syrian-American community in the coming stages and foreign policy in general, particularly the upcoming White House visit and the expected meeting with President Trump.
The discussion also touched on domestic conditions in Syria in their political, social, livelihood, and educational dimensions, in addition to the file of transitional justice.
Ghanem added on X that on Monday, 10 November, a broader meeting will be held with a large number of members of the Syrian-American community from various U.S. states.
Al-Sharaa to meet Trump
White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said in a 4 November press briefing that President Trump will meet Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa at the White House next Monday.
“We have seen good progress toward peace under Syria’s new leadership,” she added.
Syria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ibrahim Alabi, said in an interview with the state-run al-Ikhbariyah that President al-Sharaa’s visit to the White House would be “unprecedented and a qualitative shift in the diplomatic context.”
This will be the third meeting between al-Sharaa and Trump, following talks in Riyadh hosted by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on 14 May, and another meeting in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly on 25 September.
It is al-Sharaa’s second visit to the United States, after he traveled to New York to attend the 80th UN General Assembly.
Sanctions lifted on al-Sharaa ahead of visit
The United States removed sanctions on Syria’s transitional president Ahmad al-Sharaa and Interior Minister Anas Khattab.
The delisting appeared in a 7 November update notice on the U.S. Treasury website, which removed both names.
The move came days before al-Sharaa’s planned visit to Washington on Monday, and after the UN Security Council voted on 6 November to remove both men from terrorism lists.
In a session titled “Threats to international peace and security caused by terrorist acts,” the Council adopted Resolution 2799, removing al-Sharaa and Khattab from international sanctions lists.
The decision passed with 14 votes in favor and no objections, with China abstaining, allowing for its formal adoption.
