CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — "It's been real slow. Very slow. So the lines haven't been too bad for either the lines or for the TSA," said airport worker Rico Cabbagestalk Jr.
Charlotte Douglas International Airport was one of 40 airports set to see flight reductions due to the government shutdown. Federal transportation leaders say the move helps air traffic controllers maintain safety on the tarmacs and in the air.
But that decision has flyers nervous that they may be affected.

"Well, actually, as we were waiting to get out here to Charlotte, we got the email from Delta saying, 'Beware, 10 percent of flights are going to be canceled starting Friday the 7th.' So we were a little worried about getting home. But Charlotte is not a bad place to get stuck, so we're willing to risk it, but it looks like we're going home today," said Juliette Daniels. She was headed to Detroit.
Flight Aware shows Charlotte Douglas had 400 delays and just under 135 cancellations by Saturday mid-afternoon. There had been more than 16,000 cancellations across the nation.
This man was one of them.
"The airline put us on a flight going to New York. That's unacceptable. Spent half an hour on the phone trying to get it switched back. Finally got it switched back," he said.
The Department of Transportation has reported increased delays and ground stops as a result of the shutdown, now in its fifth consecutive week. Air traffic controllers and airport security screeners are among the employees required to work during the shutdown as essential employees, even though they're not receiving regular paychecks.
"For the last few days, it's been a very slow process for us. We all wish this government shutdown would be over with. Our people need to get paid," Cabbagestalk said.
"Settle the dispute. Open up the government. And that's it, and move on. The American worker is getting hurt," another flyer said.
