Wonder Woman Star Lynda Carter Shares Inspiring Message for the Show’s 50th Anniversary

Lynda Carter is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the very first episode of Wonder Woman. On Nov. 7, the beloved actress posted a message to Instagram as she celebrated girl power five decades after debuting her role as Amazon princess Diana Prince on the 1970s superhero series.

Carter, 74, shared artwork by animators Catherine and Sarah Satrun that depicted women of all ethnicities celebrating while wearing Wonder Woman’s signature jeweled tiara, red boots, and blue-starred skirt. The phrase “We are all Wonder Women” was written under the drawing.

“Hey! Calling all Wonder Women!” Carter captioned the post. “We all are sisters…pulling together with one spirit.”

“50 years ago today, the first episode of the series Wonder Woman aired,” Carter continued. “I truly believe the reason we liked her was because we recognized her within ourselves. The multifaceted parts of her personality, her strength, her beauty, her warmth, her tenacity, and her honesty is who you are! We recognize those qualities in her because those are the qualities that women possess. We understand one another because we alone are the Mothers of all Mankind. We are magnificent…at every age…at every challenge, and we do whatever it takes.”

Carter thanked fans for all of the love shown to her over the past 50 years, and she gave a shout-out to Gal Gadot and director Patty Jenkins for keeping Wonder Woman’s legend “alive and strong” in the more recent DC Extended Universe films.

Fans reacted to Carter’s post with comments of gratitude and hope.

“What a wonderful gesture during these trying times. Thank you for hope, Wonder Woman ? ???,” one fan wrote.

“We need Wonder Woman more than ever now ,” another agreed.

“50 years later still inspiring, ALL of us thank you as always @reallyndacarter,” a third fan chimed in.

Carter first appeared as Wonder Woman on November 7, 1975, in the ABC TV movie The New Original Wonder Woman. The 1975 movie followed a failed 1974 pilot starring Cathy Lee Crosby as Wonder Woman, which didn’t resonate with fans, according to Remind magazine.

During a 1975 appearance on The Tonight Show, Carter agreed with host Johnny Carson that her Wonder Woman movie was more fun and campy than the 1974 pilot. “I think the way that they did it the previous time, they really didn't have fun with it,” she told Carson. “They didn't do it and have fun.”

When asked if she thought there would be more of her as Wonder Woman, Carter replied, “It really depends on the ratings, and the ratings were terrific.”

Carter’s Wonder Woman TV show was ultimately picked up by ABC. The beloved series aired for three seasons from 1976 to 1979. The series moved to CBS in season 2 and was renamed The New of Adventures of Wonder Woman.
