On Nov. 1, funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) dried up due to the ongoing government shutdown. On Thursday, a federal judge from Rhode Island ordered President Donald Trump’s administration to fully fund the program for the month by Friday, Nov. 7 — although it is unclear when or if that money will be available to recipients.
Still, numerous local groups and organizations have taken up the fight against hunger on a local level.
Here is Chapelboro’s guide to resources in the Orange County and Chatham County communities:
Chapel Hill
• The Town of Chapel Hill holds food distribution events on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of every month from the Eubanks Park-and-Ride lot at 2000 Eubanks Road starting at 9:30 a.m.
• PORCH will conduct emergency food distribution at McDougle Middle School on Saturday, November 8 from 12-4 p.m. or until food runs out. Check out our full story on that event here.
• The Chapel Hill Public Library has started a food pantry on the ground floor, located at 100 Library Drive.
• Carolina Cupboard is a food pantry specifically for UNC students. It can be found at Carolina Housing Office Room 1221. It is open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Students can fill out required forms to get food here.
• KidSCope has an outdoor community refrigerator at their location at 600 Homestead Road. It is available 24/7 and is restocked every Tuesday.
• The Rogers Road Rena Community Center is distributing food boxes in-person on second Tuesdays from 11 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. and via drive-thru third Saturdays from 10:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. or as long as supplies last. An application is required, which can be found here.
Carrboro
• TABLE is still working to provide food to community members in need, and are taking community donations at 311 E. Main Street in Carrboro Monday through Thursday 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Donations close at 1 p.m. on Fridays. The organization says it is especially in need of one pound bags of rice, dried beans, and pasta, as well as canned tuna and chicken, shelf-stable milk, and produce including avocados, oranges and apples.
• The Inter-Faith Council (IFC)’s community kitchen serves hot meals Monday through Friday from 11:15 a.m. until 12:30 p.m., and from 5:15 p.m. until 6 p.m., and on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays from 11:15 a.m. until noon. Their community market has food and hygiene items but requires appointments, and is open from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. They are located at 110 W. Main Street in Carrboro.
• The Southern Branch Library at the Drakeford Library Complex in Carrboro has started a food pantry. It is located on the ground floor, and is in need of non-perishable items.
Hillsborough
• PORCH Hillsborough manages a monthly food distribution in partnership with the Food Bank of Central and Eastern NC on the fourth Friday of each month at Cedar Grove Community Center in Hillsborough.
• The Orange County Public Library in Hillsborough has also started a food pantry. Non-perishable foods can be donated in the main lobby. Their food distribution box is located at 137 W Margaret Lane.
• The Orange County Department of Social Services distributes food boxes on the fourth Thursday of every month at 113 Mayo Street. They begin at 9 a.m. and work until all boxes have been distributed.
Pittsboro
• The Chatham Outreach Alliance, or CORA, has a food pantry at 40 Camp Drive in Pittsboro. It is open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. in-store, and the drive-thru is open Fridays from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. CORA also has Feed-Well fridges, which is a program where local restaurants prepare packaged meals. These are available as supplies last.
• Davenport’s Cafe Diem at 439 Hillsboro Street is providing hot meals “no-questions asked” for both dine-in and take-out.
• Chatham County Aging Services is providing food resources to residents over 60. Their on-site congregate nutrition program runs Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Meals On Wheels is also present weekdays, and can deliver food directly to residences. On-site distribution takes place at the Pittsboro Center for Active Living at 365 NC Highway 86 N.
• Those seeking food assistance can also acquire a $20 token to be used at the Pittsboro Farmer’s Market, which is open Thursdays 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. at The Plant at 220 Lorax Lane.
• In addition to the groups, businesses, and organizations listed above, many local churches are also participating in food distribution. A complete list can be found here. The main takeaway? If you are looking for help, there are plenty of people in the community looking to provide it.
Siler City
• CORA’s newest choice pantry is in Siler City at 2535 Old U.S. Hwy 421 N. It is open three days a week regularly (Mondays from 4 to 6 p.m., Wednesdays from 12 to 2 p.m., and Fridays from 12 to 2 p.m.), as well as the second Saturday of each month.
• The interfaith partnership Chatham Alliance helps offer free, pre-cooked and vacuum packed entrees to community members through a variety of programs — including the Chatham Chuckwagon, which offers curbside pick-up of meals. You can find the Chuckwagon every Friday at Countryside Antiques Mall at 219 Chatham Square in Siler City (11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.), as well as at St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church at 200 Rectory Street in Pittsboro every Tuesday (4:30 to 6 p.m.)
