A paramedic who was inside an ambulance when it was stolen outside a Chicago hospital managed to escape before a dramatic pursuit unfolded and wound through multiple neighborhoods on Friday.
The series of events began at around 4 p.m., when a Cicero Fire Department ambulance crew transported a patient to Loretto Hospital, a town spokesman said. One paramedic was inside the ambulance as a patient being escorted from the hospital by security ran to the driver’s side door, got inside and drove away.
The paramedic jumped out approximately two blocks away, the spokesman said.
A second paramedic, who was standing by the back door of the ambulance, quickly called 911, allowing Chicago police to respond quickly.
Chicago police chased the stolen ambulance as the suspect erratically drove through neighborhoods and nearly crashed into other vehicles, video captured by NBC Chicago’s Sky 5 helicopter showed. The pursuit was brought to an end when the ambulance struck a Chicago Police Department patrol vehicle head-on, as well as a second vehicle.
More than a dozen officers swarmed the suspect, who tried to get away, and quickly took him into custody.
The incident led to a massive law enforcement presence in the area; dozens of marked police vehicles were observed at the scene, footage showed.
While police didn’t immediately confirm if shots were fired, Chicago’s Civilian Oversight Police Agency said it was investigating an officer-involved shooting near where the chase occurred. The agency didn’t provide additional details.
