A driver in stolen ambulance led police on a stunning chase beginning on Chicago’s West Side and ending in nearby Cicero, where he was taken into custody.
While it wasn’t immediately clear what occurred prior, the pursuit began before 4 p.m. at West Jackson Boulevard and South Central Avenue in Chicago’s Austin neighborhood.
Video captured by NBC Chicago’s Sky 5 helicopter showed Chicago police pursuing the ambulance as it erratically wound through neighborhoods, evaded officers and nearly crashed into several vehicles.
The chase came to a dramatic end when the stolen ambulance, heading along Chicago Avenue near Cicero Avenue, crashed into a Chicago Police Department vehicle head-on and a second vehicle. Video showed the suspect exit the ambulance, fell to the ground and try to run away. The suspect was then quickly swarmed by more than a dozen law enforcement officers who carried him by his legs and arms and took him into custody.
The collision damaged the front of a Chicago police vehicle, caused the airbags to be deployed and led to a chain-reaction crash involving at least two other vehicles.
