Beloved Steakhouse Chain Reveals More Closures on the Horizon Amid Turnaround Effort

Bloomin' Brands, the parent company of Outback Steakhouse and several other restaurants, has shared updates on its turnaround plan while providing details regarding third-quarter financial performance. Bloomin' Brands released a statement on November 6 with the details, which includes some additional restaurant location closures ahead.

As Parade recently detailed, a handful of Outback Steakhouse locations closed in October. In addition, one Bonefish Grill location in Madison, Wisconsin, was closed recently.

According to USA Today on November 6, Bloomin' Brands closed a total of 21 restaurant locations across the United States over the past few months. In addition, 22 restaurant locations under the parent company have not had their leases renewed.

The company did not detail which locations those are. However, the group of locations that will close upon the completion of their current lease includes Outback Steakhouse and Bonefish Grill locations, as well as another restaurant owned by Bloomin' Brands, Carrabba's Italian Grill. It seems that Fleming's Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar, the company's fourth brand, has not been affected. The leases are slated to expire over the next four years.

As USA Today noted, Bloomin' Brands also closed 41 locations, mostly Outback Steakhouse restaurants, in February 2024.

In the newly-released press report, Bloomin' Brands CEO Mike Spanos indicated, "We have great momentum in our business as demonstrated by our third quarter results." He added, "All four brands drove positive comparable store sales growth for the first time since Q1 2023."

The company's focus as they forge forward with their turnaround strategy is on both guest experiences and food quality. Outback Steakhouse will be the company's primary focus.

Spanos shared that they will continue to test new ideas while focusing on "steak excellence." He noted, "Simply put, we are getting back to our roots of serious food and a focus on steak. We are first and foremost a steakhouse."

There are currently more than 1,450 restaurants open across the U.S. under the Bloomin' Brands umbrella. There are over 200 Carrabba's Italian Grill locations and 166 Bonefish Grill restaurants. Fleming's currently has 65 locations, and the company has almost 700 Outback Steakhouse restaurants. They also have over 350 international restaurant locations, most of which are located in South Korea and Brazil.
