FEMA is sending $155 million in new aid to North Carolina, the agency announced Friday, in a bundle of federal money that will fund 130 projects for Hurricane Helene cleanup and other disaster recovery projects.
The new round of funding is the most substantial FEMA aid North Carolina has received since the beginning of the government shutdown. It includes $54 million for the NC Department of Transportation to continue rebuilding roads and bridges.
Another total $40 million will go to two utilities — French Broad Electric Company and Rutherford Electric Membership Corporation — to make repairs and prepare emergency protective measures.
And an array of counties and local municipalities are also seeing grant money:
$14.8 million to Henderson County for debris removal. $9.6 million to Buncombe County for debris removal, emergency protective measures and road repairs. $3.3 million to the village of Sugar Mountain to repair recreational facilities. $1.6 million to the town of Boone for road repairs. $1.4 million for repair work at Paddy’s Creek Beach and Catawba Beach. $1.3 million to the Buncombe County school board to repair two schools.State officials continue to wait on other key avenues of federal funding for Helene recovery. A $1.4 billion pool of grant money will fund an expansive homebuilding program that now has over 4,000 applicants. And another grant program that allows FEMA to buyout private properties has had applications pending with the agency for months.
