Ex-‘SNL’ Star Reveals What Lorne Michaels Told Her After She Bombed on Live TV

Comedian and actress Leslie Jones is getting candid about having a mishap during an episode of Saturday Night Live.

Entertainment Weekly reported that Jones, who starred on SNL for five years until 2019, recounted being confused during a sketch with Chris Rockin the October 30 episode of Vulture's Good One podcast. In the Season 40 episode, which aired in November 2014, Jones and Rock appeared together in the sketch, "The Arguing Couple," wherein they played said couple.

"So the joke was that we've been with each other so long that we just been arguing, but we love each other. But we're driving our kid crazy with how we argue," said Jones on the podcast episode.

She said, however, she began to have some issues in front of the live studio audience as she was unfamiliar with how the cue cards worked.

"That was my first major sketch. I didn't understand the color of the pens. So I didn't know that the host is always black ... and then I had blue. They didn't tell me what my color was, so I didn't know what my lines [were]," explained Jones.

Jones then said that the stage manager began yelling her name during the sketch.

"I'm surprised they didn't hear him on-camera. I remember that being terrible. I freaked out, and afterwards, I felt like I was just going to jump into the river," said Jones in the interview, per Entertainment Weekly.

Jones then shared how her Season 40 cast members and the show's creator, Lorne Michaels, reacted to the situation.

"Every cast member, including Lorne [Michaels] came up and said, 'This is Live, baby.' And I remember Vanessa Bayer sitting down next to me and going, 'It'll never happen again, will it?' And I was like, 'Damn, you guys are so good.' And they were like, 'Yeah, it's happened to everyone.' I remember Lorne coming over going, 'It's Live, baby. It happens,'" said Jones during the Good One podcast episode.

Leslie Jones Says She Was Hired as an 'SNL' Writer

In a September 2022 episode of Bill Maher's podcast, Club Random with Bill Maher, Jones explained that she was originally hired as a writer for the NBC sketch comedy show.

"They didn't hire me as a cast member first. I was a writer. I came out and auditioned with a bunch of people but they just asked me to stay as a writer," said Jones in the podcast interview.

She also told Maher started performing for the SNL cameras after she was given a segment on "Weekend Update." She explained that she wasn't nervous to film the segment because she was repeating well-established jokes from her stand-up.

"When they gave me that 'Update,' it was just like doing stand up but just sitting down. I was like, 'Got this s--t. That's easy,'" said Jones in the 2022 interview.
