Nearly eight years after Chris Cornell’s passing, Soundgarden is entering the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame — a moment both triumphant and bittersweet for the Seattle icons.
In a Variety interview shared on Friday, November 7, guitarist Kim Thayil reflected on the band’s journey from outsiders to industry legends, admitting the Hall of Fame was never something Soundgarden aimed for.
“In the ’80s or even in the ’90s, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was not something that I saw as a legitimate consequence of my work or career. I didn’t see that as an objective, it wasn’t on my radar,” he said. But Thayil’s perspective shifted after Cornell inducted Heart in 2013. “Chris and [bassist] Ben Shepherd attended that year, and they both came back with a positive experience,” Thayil stated. “Chris communicated to me, ‘You know how we’ve always felt about the Hall of Fame and how it didn’t really matter to us? It matters to the fans.’”
That right there was the turning point for Thayil. “And he convinced me — we might have had a few different conversations about it, but I trusted Chris’ judgment and insight in that regard,” he shared.

For Thayil, the upcoming ceremony is more than recognition — it’s a tribute to Cornell’s impact to the music industry. “What we do is in honor of our legacy, and in honor of Chris and how he loved us,” he shared.
Cornell’s absence still weighs heavily on the band. In a recent Bass magazine interview, Shepherd revealed he had a “bad feeling” before what became Soundgarden’s final tour in 2017. “Something came over me, and I deeply felt like I couldn’t do it,” he said. Shepherd also reflected on the band’s unfinished recordings with Cornell, admitting, “Without Chris, we aren’t Soundgarden.”
Soundgarden is set to take the stage for their induction on Saturday, November 8 for what will be a celebration of music, brotherhood, and the lasting spirit of Chris Cornell.
