Another reintroduced wolf has died in Colorado, Parks and Wildlife officials announced Friday morning, as they released limited details on a mortality alert for a female gray wolf that apparently died Oct. 30.
Wolf #2506, one of a group of wolves reintroduced from British Columbia in January, died in southwestern Colorado, the agency said.
Because gray wolves are a listed endangered species in Colorado, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will investigate the circumstances of the death. The review will include a necropsy.
While every gray wolf mortality is investigated, state wildlife officials working on the yearslong reintroduction have noted there will be natural attrition among the reintroduced wolves and the pups they have after relocating to Colorado. The death of a reintroduced wolf in northwestern Colorado was reported May 31, for example.
The agency has also killed one wolf under its own rules, and relocated others found to be predating excessively on local livestock. The state agency said in September it had killed a yearling wolf confirmed to have killed six sheep in Rio Blanco County. DNA samples identified it as the pup left behind when the agency trapped the Copper Creek pack in August 2024.
The Trump administration could complicate further reintroductions of wolves to Colorado, a controversial measure approved by statewide voters narrowly in 2020. The federal administration has said it would not support additional wolves coming from Canada, and some states where Colorado could find gray wolf packs have also said they will not be involved in the program.
