Leaves. So many leaves. Everywhere leaves. You look so pretty on the trees, but, on the ground, I could not hate you more.
Some praise for Colin Rea, and for the Cubs for retaining him for 2026 with the option of 2027. This is not a guy who turns many heads, but that’s not his job. Instead, Rea is a steady swing-man who can fill in at the back of the rotation if needed – which he was for most of the year – and he put up a 3.95 ERA in the process. It doesn’t stand out as being as good and useful as it was, I think, because the Cubs happened to have four other pitchers who threw at least 100 innings and posted a better ERA. But consider where Rea’s ERA would’ve fallen on the other playoff teams, among pitchers with at least 100 innings: on the Dodgers, he would’ve been third; on the Brewers, he would’ve been fourth; on the Padres, he would’ve been third; on the Phillies, he would’ve been fifth; and on the Reds, he would’ve been fourth. In other words, Colin Rea performed like a very good 4/5 starter *on a playoff-caliber team.* And the Cubs are getting him back for $5.5 million, with an option for 2027. Maybe he falls way off at age 35 (though the velocity was actually up in 2025), but this is such a modest swing that it’s obviously worth it. All credit to Rea, and also to the front office and coaching staff for knowing what they had last year, when very few of us were excited about the signing (reading back, it looks like I appreciated the signing more than I remembered, but it’s not like I was doing twirls of excitement). Getting Rea back at the start of the offseason, by the way, feels a lot better this time around: it doesn’t have to be the final pitching acquisition. This is simply high-quality depth and protection. Bullpen talk on the latest BN Cubs Podcast, among many other things:Should the Cubs bring back Brad Keller?
