Bedard and Burakovsky, Nestrašil Praise, Two Frondell Goals, Kane’s Status, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

I want to take a quick moment to chat about what the Blackhawks have found in the combination of Connor Bedard with André Burakovsky.

Burakovsky played an important role on two Stanley Cup championship teams in Washington and Colorado before signing with Seattle. When his production (and health) didn’t help the Kraken as much as they wanted/expected, their front office decided to move on from the player. The Blackhawks got Burakovsky for Joe Veleno this summer.

Plenty of questions (doubts) were expressed in the days and weeks after the trade — including from yours truly. But, going back to my reaction piece, I noted the following:

Maybe the Blackhawks see something in Burakovsky similar to what they saw in Ilya Mikheyev when they acquired him from the Canucks last year.

Like Mikheyev and Jason Dickinson before him, Burakovsky was acquired in a pure salary dump trade. The big difference: the Blackhawks didn’t bring back any additional draft capital in this deal. Burakovsky came with two years remaining at his full $5.5M cap hit; Seattle did not retain money (Vancouver did with Mikheyev). That’s where the questions were raised.

Here are the numbers for Bedard with Burakovsky and without him thru Wednesday night’s game:

Maybe we need to start considering hitting the pause button on deals like this? Because Burakovsky, like Mikheyev and Dickinson, has been a terrific addition on the ice and in the room. He’s made the Blackhawks a better team. Clearly the Blackhawks pro scouts are doing a good job.

Steven Ellis at Daily Faceoff projected a roster for Canada at the upcoming World Junior Championship. He has one Blackhawks prospect making the roster: Boston University center Sacha Boisvert, who he lists as an extra forward. Marek Vanacker and John Mustard are mentioned as “also considered.” Speaking of the upcoming World Juniors, Sweden played Slovakia in a tune-up game on Thursday morning. Blackhawks prospect Anton Frondell was the top-line center for Sweden, and he scored twice in the game. Here are the goals, the first of which came on the power play:

    — Ontario Hockey League (@OHLHockey) November 7, 2025 In the only NCAA game last night, Maine beat UMass 6-2. Blackhawks prospect and freshman forward Václav Nestrašil had one assist in the game. I absolutely love reading this from UMass head coach Greg Carvel about Nestrašil (from before last night’s game). Blackhawks prospect Adam Gajan is off to one of the hottest starts between the pipes in all of college hockey. His performance to date earned him a spot on the US Collegiate Selects roster for the Spengler Cup.

    — UMD Men's Hockey (@UMDMensHockey) November 6, 2025 Good news in Rockford: the IceHogs announced goalie Stanislav Berezhnoy and defenseman Andrew Perrott have been cleared to return to play. The Red Wings’ next two games — both at home — are against Patrick Kane’s previous employers: the Rangers on Friday night and the Blackhawks on Sunday. We’ll see if 88 is healthy enough to skate in either of them. Here’s hoping we get to watch Bedard vs. Kane on Sunday afternoon.

Patrick Kane felt good through today’s practice. Todd McLellan said they’ll decide tomorrow if Kane will return to the lineup vs. NYR. #LGRW
