Josh Giddey is silencing the critics.
When the Oklahoma City Thunder decided to move on from the guard ahead of their championship season, few were surprised. Giddey was coming off the worst season of his career, which ended with a very public benching in the postseason. When the ball wasn’t in his hands, he looked completely lost, so much so that the Dallas Mavericks considered him a non-factor when looming behind the three-point line.
To be sure, fans and analysts alike were not completely out on the former lottery pick. He was only 22 years old at the time of the trade with a clearly elite skillset. However, there are plenty of talented players at the NBA level who never quite figure it out, and questions started to emerge about whether Giddey could join that list. Could he truly impact winning with such an inefficient three-point jumper or a lethal allergy to physicality? What about with his subpar defense and lack of raw explosiveness?
Nobody is prepared to declare Giddey a flawless player after only seven games, but there is no doubt that the version we’re all seeing this season has far fewer problems to solve. Yes, the Bulls’ unselfish ways are the reason for their 6-1 start to the season, but Giddey is also the biggest motivator of those unselfish ways. He is an elite floor general with an innate feel for pushing the pace and setting up open teammates. And this top-shelf decision-making is also starting to show up in other areas of his game.
Indeed, Giddey has done an excellent job picking and choosing his spots to be aggressive offensively. He is averaging a career-high 23.1 points per game to go along with his 9.1 assists, and he’s done so while shooting 49.6 percent from the field and 41.9 percent from downtown. With this has come the willingness to embrace physicality in a way that many have long thought the six-foot-eight guard should. He’s settling for fewer floaters and taking the extra step to the rim. Not only has this made him more efficient, but it’s also led to him nearly doubling his free-throw attempts per game from last season.
All in all, Josh Giddey is now averaging a near triple-double with 23.1 points, 10.0 rebounds, and 9.1 assists per game. His back-to-back triple-double performances against the Knicks and 76ers made him the first Bulls player to accomplish that feat since Michael Jordan.
Whether or not this version of Giddey is here to stay is something only time will tell. However, for someone who has been criticized in the past for accumulated empty calorie stats, this is the kind of stretch that changes minds. And the national media is making that very clear.
Josh Giddey Turning Heads Around the League
As I go about my scrolling, the Josh Giddey praise has just continued to land in my lap. I first ran into The Athletic NBA Daily team discussing the Chicago Bulls’ hot start in its Wednesday episode. Dave DuFour and Es Baraheni were joined by beat reporter Joel Lorenzi, and each raved about Giddey’s recent development.
I highly encourage you to give that a listen. They also dive into Nikola Vucevic’s impact, which is something we also touched on in this morning’s notes.
I next stumbled upon Chandler Parsons and Lou Williams talking Bulls on FanDuel TV’s Run It Back. While they each praised the team-first mentality and play style shown by this young group, both stressed why having a player like Giddey is so important.
Parsons even went as far as to say that Giddey is a borderline All-Star starter for what he has been able to accomplish over the first couple of weeks.
Lastly, a clip from Gilbert Arena’s show has also made its rounds. When asked whether he would start a team right now with Josh Giddey or the Charlotte Hornets’ LaMelo Ball, Arenas sided with the Bulls’ emerging star.
Now, do I think his reasoning was all that sound? Eh. He suggested that the value of Giddey is his ability to fit alongside nearly anyone in the backcourt, but I’m not sure I see things that way. Nevertheless, the fact that he is even throwing him ahead of the big-name LaMelo speaks volumes.

— NBACentral (@TheDunkCentral) November 5, 2025Once again, Josh Giddey still has a long road ahead of him before he’s playing in the All-Star Game or truly changing the fate of this Chicago Bulls franchise. But the mere fact that experts and former players alike are turning their heads says that he is on the right track.
