One Voter, No Vote
A perspective from Tim Crone
As a Chapel Hill parent and resident I am obliged to our three wonderful candidates for the three CHCCS school board seats, they ran diligent campaigns and I am glad that they will be elected and reelected. But today my vote did not matter, and as a gesture of civil defiance I submitted my blank ballot this morning. I wish these three well, but this evening their unanimous victory will be less one.
Uncontested elections are a tragedy: democracy fails in concurrence as well as violence. Are there no dreamers for our schools? Is every CHCCS policy perfected? Are all of our children served equally and appropriately? Open elections are not just about winning and losing – they are about offering new ideas, challenging the status quo, sharpening our representatives so they best represent all of us. No one likes to lose, and I expect the three victors today would have prevailed regardless – but what a sad day that we were only able to offer them a pat on the back during this campaign season, rather than hone and discipline their convictions through open debates. The unilateral elections, the quiet elections, with no challenging ideas and no choices and yes, no losers – those are tragically missed opportunities for our public servants and for our community.
