Rochester restaurant offering free meals weekly amid ongoing government shutdown

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Businesses in Rochester are stepping up to help those in need during the ongoing government shutdown. The Hideaway on Park Avenue is offering free meals every Thursday, no questions asked.

On Thursday, people started arriving at noon, with most opting for takeout. Sherian Jenkins, who came with two others, was grateful for the meal.

“And a beautiful spot, getting a free meal off a menu. Not something that’s trayed. Not something that’s in a can. Not something that if a person don’t have a stove to cook on, you know they come in here, get an order and get a meal of choice. Beautiful. I love this,” Jenkins said.

Lonzo Green, a first-time visitor to the Hideaway, came along with Jenkins.

“What that means for me…that means there’s still hope, initiative out there. That means that people still care about you out there,” Green said.

Max Gordon, owner of the Hideaway, explained that this isn’t the first time they’ve provided meals during challenging times. They offered similar support during previous government shutdowns, the COVID-19 pandemic, and holidays.

“So it’s in our DNA. And it is something that when we heard of all the chaos going on, it felt right,” Gordon said.

To participate, people can take a ticket for each person in their party and use it at checkout. For takeout, guests can inform staff they came for a free meal.

“We know we’re not solving any crises. The whole point of this is — if you have enough going on, can we be your respite for an hour once a week?” Gordon said.

For Ashlee Tarr, who relies on food stamps, that’s a much needed break.

“The fact that I am on food stamps, I’ve been really struggling. I’ve literally been eating pasta for four days because it’s all I have,” Tarr said. “So having businesses like this that are willing to help out really, is really nice.”

Gordon said they will continue offering free meals every Thursday for the duration of the government shutdown and as long as food assistance pauses persist. The ticket covers anything off their lunch menu and one non-alcoholic beverage.

Besides The Hideaway, many other places in the Rochester area are also helping out and providing meals to people.
