White Lotus Star Reveals How Angelina Jolie Supported Her Amid Mental Health Struggles

Aimee Lou Wood revealed how Angelina Jolie supported her amid her mental health struggles on set of their movie Anxious People.

While filming the upcoming comedy, Wood, 31, told Harper’s Bazaar in an interview published on Wednesday, November 5, that Jolie, 50, was there for her during a moment of panic. She explained they were working an emotional scene, and Wood was struggling to get into character as multiple crew members shouted at her at the same time. Wood ultimately told them that she needed only one person to give her directions with no hand movements in order for her to focus.

"I've spent years feeling unable to say anything like that for fear of seeming argumentative — but now I feel like I can take ownership of what I need to thrive, and tell people what won’t work for me,” the White Lotus alum said.

Once Wood found the courage and “spoke up,” she said Jolie was quick to show her support.

“All I could see was Angelina giving me a thumbs up,” she said. “She’s possibly the most famous woman ever, but she’s so normal. I’m fairly certain she drives herself to set each day.”

Based on the 2019 Fredrik Backman novel of the same name, Anxious People follows investment banker Zara (Jolie), who “begrudgingly finds herself mingling with a group of strangers at an open house” on the day before Christmas Eve, according to the film’s synopsis. “When a reluctant bank robber, Grace (Wood), inadvertently takes the group hostage, chaos and oversharing ensues, secrets are revealed and literally nothing goes according to plan.”

Also during the recent interview, Wood opened up about how playing Chelsea on season 3 of The White Lotus resulted in her dealing with body dysmorphia. After she dealt with body dysmorphia as a teenager, she said having to film many scenes in a bikini brought back the same feelings.

According to the Mayo Clinic, body dysmorphia is a mental health condition when a person can't stop thinking about one or more perceived defects or flaws in their appearance.

However, Wood revealed she was eventually able to get herself out of the troubling mindset. "I shook myself out of it by thinking, 'It’s not about whether Aimee wants to show her body or not – Chelsea does,'" she told the outlet.

She went on to note that the connection she feels to her characters is why she loves acting so much, even when it's sometimes hard to separate herself from them. "Acting has always been a safe place for me to work out my feelings," Wood said. "I think for that reason a role will hit me in the heart, in the gut."
