A heavy police presence was reported Thursday afternoon outside a hotel in suburban Wheeling, with multiple police cars from neighboring areas seen in the parking lot and officers spotted walking with long guns and shields.
The police presence was captured by NBC Chicago photographer George Mycyk about 12 p.m., in the parking lot of the MainStay Suites Northbrook Wheeling, located at 8000 Capitol Dr.
Vehicles from at least seven nearby suburban police departments were on scene, photos showed, including Buffalo Grove, Palatine, Riverwoods, Mount Prospect, Prospect Heights, Arlington Heights and Wheeling, as well as a Wheeling police forensic unit.
Police cars could also be seen in front of National Louis University’s Wheeling campus, located within a .01 mile radius.
A text message obtained by NBC Chicago appearing to be from National Louis University said the campus was on lockdown due to an “unrelated incident.” The message told students to stay inside and wait for an all-clear.
The NLU Wheeling campus confirmed to NBC Chicago it was on a lockdown for safety measures due to an incident across the street.
Wheeling police did not immediately respond to NBC Chicago’s request for comment. NBC Chicago also reached out to National Louis University for a statement.
